I am searching for the name John Handebo who was originally from Westmeath in Ireland. He was supposedly a son or grandson of the Earl of Pembroke. His family name was formerly Herbert but changed to Handebo because of a feudal Baron under Charles I. The name change was never registered. John came out to Australia as a convict during the 1800's. The Handebo name is now a dynasty in itself in Australia. They are supposed direct descendants of the Royal families of Ireland and England as this family led the Norman invasion into Ireland. The Handebo's are supposedly directly descended from "Strongbow" or Richard de Clare of Ireland who married Princess Aiofe. All his sons were either murdered or killed at various battles. One of his daughter's, my relative Isabella married a Herbert so then he became Earl of Pembroke. T family name then changed to Herbert as women were not entitled to inheritance in those days. I would dearly love to know where the name changed to Handebo. A lot of our information has been taken from family bibles over the generations so there must be some truth in the matter. One day we may be able to have a DNA test done to prove our connections.

Dear Sue,
I am descended from Isabella De Clare and her husband William Marshall. Their sons inherited the title of Earl of Pembroke and 5 of their sons in succession from oldest to youngest held that title all the way to the 9th Earl of Pembroke.

I find no record of the title being passed to the Herbert or Handebo families, so I suspect that whomever is in Australia claiming that descent is in fact incorrect.

I am interested in exploring this more, if you have any more information I would love to hear it.

Also, women did in fact inherit titles, that is a misgiving that they did not. Isabella was well known as the Countess of Pembroke before getting married to William Marshall.

William Marshal in fact was the Marshall of Pembroke that he inherited from his Father John Fitzgilbert. His grandfather was the Sheriff of Wiltshire. Surnames in that time sometimes reflected the Title carried by the family.

You may find this information in:
The Complete Peerage vol.X,pp.358-364

I hope this helps!

I'm trying to learn about Laura Verrall WILLETT (family name changed from CATT). upon her second marriage ( 1st husband, Herbert CROSSLEY) her details are recorded thus:

Name: Laura V (countess De Clare) CROSSLEY Spouse Surname: D'arger Registration Year: 1914 Registration Quarter: Apr-May-Jun Registration district: St Marylebone Inferred County: London Volume: 1a Page: 1409

Was she in fact a countess? if so I assume somehow via the CROSSLEY marriage, however I can't find any definitive answer. Help very appreciated, cheers, Terrill
