Hi,
According to a family chronicle written about 1900, the Schurdel family of East Prussia came from a French Count who left France at the time of the revolution. He rented an estate in East Prussia and there changed his name to Schurdel.

The original name was de la Chorle, or something similar. I've never seen the name spelled out -- only spoken. Supposedly the great-grandfather died in Dauphine, France, at age 103, but I don't know when that was.

I've never done any research in France, and I know no French.
I'd welcome any suggestions, ideas, information or direction. Thanks!

Thank you, Christopher!

Perhaps you can help me understand this page:
http://www.eurogeneal.com/table_generale_L.htm
which includes this entry in the listing,
LA CHORLE (de) Q78.D791.238

Do you think I'd be able to get any information from this site?

Thank you.

Surnames: La Chorle, zu Dohna
It looks like they have taken an index of family names from Le Grand Armorial de France by Henri Jougla de Morenas to entice people to buy the set of books. If you live in a major city or live close to a major university library you can take a look at this collection of books and find the entry Q78 D791.238 to find out the heraldric shield from this family. It might just be a description of the coat of arms, but will not give you any genealogy. I noticed the connection with the zu Dohna family. Maybe you should look into that family to find the count that befriended yr. ancestor. I noticed a zu Dohna thread on this site under Prussia. It might be another way of getting info. The zu Dohna are a very famous aristocratic family with many branches, Lauck, Schilobitten, Leistenau, etc... Another suggestion, when looking in French books always look under L for La Chorle. Happy Hunting!

Thank you for that information, and for the suggestions. I've read what I could find on the zu Dohnas, and we even visited the ruins of the castle at Schlobitten, as well as the estate that Schurdel rented at Guhren. But we were unable to get any information about our family there.

Thanks again for your help.
