According to CIA FACTBOOK the Grand Duchy of Lithuania is more correctly the Grand Principality of Lithuania. By way of interpretation, this royal style flows naturally from the coronations of Kings Mindaugas and Gediminas, variously and inappropriately degraded to Duke or Chieftan. Vytautas missed coronation as a result of Polish intervention, although he was the hereditary successor and ruled Lithuania as such.
