Seeking info on Lelia Sumner b. 1905? d,. 1935 Pineville, MO

I'm trying to sort out some family stories and I am hoping to find people still living who may have known one or more of my family members:
I've found the death certificates of William Mack Sumner and also his first wife, Lelia Skaggs Sumner. I have found their families listed in US Census from 1880 to 1920. I found Denis Skags, Lelia's father, in the 1930 census, and I think I found Isaac Sumner, too. I found two marriage certificates for William Mack Sumner and Lelia (one was Lelia Skaggs and the other was Mrs. Lelia Mathis) --the latter in 1918 and the former in 1923.

I know they had my grandma, Juanita Marie Sumner, in 1924. Her sister's name is Frances, and I believe her to be born in 1925. Frances Sumner married Earl Cunningham, and I found a marriage certificate from Arkansas. I know that Frances and her brother William were extras in the 1939 movie Jesse James with Tyrone Power.

Lelia Sumner died at the age of 35. Her death certificate says she died of "dropsy"--now known as congenital heart disease. My father, Juanita's son, said that William's first wife died in "an accident." He said the second wife was named Janise. Janice Sumner is listed on William Mack's death certificate as the person providing the information.

If you know anyone who is a lifelong resident of Pineville or Noel, can you please ask them if they remember any of these people? It's got to be one amazing, messed up story and I'd love to hear it! Juanita has passed away, too, in 2004. My dad was small when he used to go to Pineville, but he remembers a Skaggs family living "down the street." According to the census I've read these are not immediate relatives but probably cousins. My dad was probably 4 or 5 last time he was there. When I speak with him again, I will ask for more details, but he doesn't have much.

Denlow C.W. Memorial Update
UPDATE - MAY 26, 2008

I returned late yesterday evening from a visit to Denlow. Once again I felt so welcomed with the warm hospitality that the people give each time I am there. I am already trying to scheme a plan in order to secure an invitation to the Denlow School Reunion each year even after our Memorial project is completed. It is possible that the delay of the memorial is a blessing after all. We have added one more names to our list of veterans and have 3 or 4 more to do research on. As mentioned previously, we do not want to leave anyone out. We also have discovered that at least one of the veterans on our list was a medal of honor recipient (William Arthur Hopper) and it is my hope that we can include a notation of that on our marker. The cemetery board built a wonderful retaining wall and platform for the placement of our marker and I wanted to share it with all. Please go to our memorial site to view the photos. http://home.earthlink.net/~cmickeys/dcm/ I also cannot end this without commenting on the descendants who come out to Denlow during the Memorial weekends. They are to be commended for such a great show of dedication to our ancestors. It is absolutely moving and amazing to see how many attend and are involved. I ALWAYS look forward to a visit in the area. Anyone with information about a Civil War Vet buried at Denlow... Please come forward. It is still not to late to add.
Coulter Reunion

We are having a Coulter reunion in Springfield, Missouri on June 1, 2008. It will be held at Lake Springfield at 11:00 a.m. We have a shelter house so if it rains, we are protected. It is pot luck so everyone is asked to bring one dish. We have so much food left over that one dish per family is always plenty. Table service will be provided. Bring your own drinks. We visit, compare notes on the families, and have a great time. Sometimes someone brings a copier and we can make coopies of information. Anyone wishing to attend, please email me and I will send you a map to the lake. The more the merrier, so if you can, please plan to attend.

My name is Diana Wittenberg. I am researching all the Coulters who are descended from Nathaniel Coulter. His children are: Mary, Robert, John, Michael and James. My husband comes down through Michael who married Janet/Jonet Cumming. Their children were Margarit, Jonet, John, Michael, Marrion, Elizabeth, Michael, John, Robert, Alexander, Janet, and Hugh. Robert married Mary Stuart and had children Archibald, Mary Ann, Elizabeth, Margaret, Robert Stuart, Anthony, James, and John. This is my husband's line through Robert Stuart. Robert Stuart's sister, Margaret Coulter, married Andrew Graham. Margaret and Andrew's daughter, Elizabeth, married John Matthew Gleghorn.

My email is dianaanddon@cox.net.

Diana Wittenberg
William Nelson

Thank you for the info and thank you for even responding! I't wonderful that you have a book on your Nelson's. I have seen the Will of your William Sr. I have also seen several records indicating that Several Williams' were in the Rev. War. My William is found in these records but it indicates that he specifically was not in the Rev. war but the Indian Wars and specifically The war of General St Clairs defeat. I have found several affidavits of his friends & former war buddies & also his 2nd wife that this was the case. He enlisted under Captain Tipton. He was wounded (1791-1792) there, and unable to really support himself, and also the date of his death. I also found him on an "Invalid Pensioners list". In the book "Roster of Soldiers and Patriots of the American Revolution buried in Tennessee", THREE Williams are listed. 1- William Nelson b. 1747, Prince Edward Co Virginia. d. 1834 Hawkins Co Tenn.
2-William Nelson Sr., lists the info that you stated about his children.and 3- my William Nelson(d. after 1837,Washington Co)m. 1st wife_____,m 2nd Sarah____. Rev. service in Tipton's company, Shelby's regiment,. Pen from Washington Co. Nelson located on Knobb Creek tributary of the watagua abt 1 mile SW of the presant boundry of Johnson City, stopping place for Bishop Ashbury; Nelson built Chapel close to his home at own exspense; 1789 the 3rd Methodist Church west of the Mountains, the second in TN. Acuff Chapel Blountville attending it 3 years. Capt. Tiptons company at St. Clairs defeat in 1791, Ref: McCown; 1834 P.L.W.

Now if I go by this info of the Chapel, It leads me to believe that my William is the son of your William Sr. However, the connection just does'nt seem right somehow. Maybe this McCown, got his info wrong? I do not know who my William's Father is although I have been looking into Southway Nelson. Have you ever heard of him? I also found in a family History of Sullivan Co Tenn. A Reason Nelson stating that he is the son of William Nelson who built a Methodist chapel on Knobb Creek, have you heard of him? Hope to hear for you !!!- Elaine

I have a book of the Nelson family so will give you some of the information:

The William Nelson that went to MO was not the one who built the chapel it was as far as I can determine his father William Nelson:

The Father:

11. William NELSON was born on August 14, 1743 in Overwharton Parish, Stafford, Virginia.13 He was living on December 10, 1772 in Dunmore County, Virginia Colony.14 Recorded birth of Son George to William Nelson and wife Mary.

He was Land Purchase on February 26, 1778 in Washington Co, Tennessee.15 Granted or purchased 460 acres.
He was Land Purchase on September 21, 1779 in Washington Co, Tennessee.16 Granted or purchased 460 acres.
He was Land Purchase on April 3, 1780 in Knobs Creek, Washington County, Tennessee.17 Purchased 187 acres.
He was living in 1783 in Dunmore County, Virginia Colony.18He signed a will in 1824 in Washington Co, Tennessee.19 Will of William Nelson
Washington County, Tennessee
1824

In the name of God, Amen. I, William Nelson of Washington and State of
Tennessee knowing the uncertainty of life and being of sound mind and
memory have thought properly to make my last will and testament. First,
I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife one horse now in my possession,
three cows, my flock of sheep, my household and kitchen furniture of
every description during her natural life. It is also my wish and
desire that she may continue to receive her support from my son Mark W.
Nelson according to the true purpose and meaning of a bond I have on
said Mark W. Nelson for my support and maintenance and her support.
Secondly, I give unto my son, Mark W. Nelson my part of the wagon and
the farming tools of every description and the small grain that is now
in the field. And it is further my wish and desire that after the death
of my beloved wife, Mary, if she should survive me, that my executors
sell all the property heretofore specially devised to my said wife after
paying all my just debts and paying my funeral expenses to be equally
divided share and share alike amongst my six daughters (to wit) Jane,
wife of William Duzan, Liddia, wife of William Clyor, Edia, wife of
Robert McCall, Polly Nelson and Susan Nelson. Thirdly, I have a claim
to a tract of land in the State of Virginia and Shenandoah County which
land I claim by entry. It is my wish and desire that Thomas Stuart if
he can recover said, it will be binding on my said executors to clothe
him with full power and authority to commence for the recovery of the
said land or for my six daughters and their husbands to give him full
power or authority to recover said land and I give unto the said Stuart
the one half of the value of said land for recovering it. The said
Stuart is not to run my estate to any expense about the said land.
Should he recover the other half of said land not heretofore specially
divided, I give and bequeath unto my above named six daughters to be
equally divided between them share and share alike. Fourish and desire
that my negro woman, Fanny, and my negro man, named Jacob, to be set
free or be emancipated and I enjoin it on my executors to have it done
agreeable to the law in such cases made. Lastly, I do hereby nominate
and appoint my live sons William Nelson and Mark W. Nelson my executors
to this my last will and testament hereby making and entirely void all
wills and testaments heretofore made by me. In testimony whereof I have
hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 27th March 1824.

Attest: Richard Carr Signed: William Nelson
Jacob Klepper
Peter Keighn
He died about 1828 in Washington County Tennessee.20 Proven by Will:

Name of wife: Mary

Name of living sons: William Nelson and Mark Wesley Nelson.

However, I think he had at lest 2 other sons. James and George, these sons must have died before William made his Will. On a historical marker in Washington County Tennessee Johnson City, at corner of Jackson Street and Watauga Avenue, it says. "On September 2, 1811, James Nelson deeded to trustees William Nelson, William Duzan, James King, Jacob Hoss, and John R. Boring, 4 acres and 8 poles to be used by the Methodist Episcopal Church for a house of worship. For many years a campground for religious meetings was maintained here with a central permanent tent and many family tents. During the Civil War Col. Robert Love's 62n N. C. Regiment, CSA, used the ground as a camp."

Name of Daughters and their husbands: Jane Nelson wife of William Duzan; Lyddia Nelson wife of William Clyor; Edia Nelson wife of James Baird; Jemima Nelson wife of Robert McCall, also unmarried daughters Polly Nelson and Susan Nelson.

Further, the will proves that William Nelson and family lived for a time in Shenandoah, Virginia as the will states that "I have a tract of land in the state of Virginia and Shenandoah County."

Found on the tax list of Virginia 1783 in Shenandoah County Virginia Number VASla22776779. This is approximately the time the children were born in Shenandoah, so we know William Nelson was there at that time. I can find no other William on the tax list at that time and in that place. However, there are several William Nelsons' listed on the Virginia tax list but not in Shenandoah, and not in the time frame we are looking for. From Shenandoah County, Virginia abstracts of Deeds: Volume one (1772 - 1784) William Nelson witnessed several deeds in 1773, Witnessed a deed in 1774. Leased land in 1782. 400 acres of land granted by Henry Nelson to his son William Nelson, by Deed of Gift 22 April 1774, (found in A. Gilreath's deed book of abstracts A, B,C,D (1772-1784) Shenandoah County, Virginia.

William NELSON was married to Mary MCKAY (AFN-HWR3-2H) (daughter of James MCKAY (AFN: KBGR - G9) and Mary CHESTER ) about 1770 in Virginia.21 According to the Green Papers (from the Virginia Historical Society) Written by Thomas Green states that Mary McKay married Wm. Nelson. Further states that the father of Mary McKay was James McKay. Mary MCKAY (AFN-HWR3-2H) was born about 1752 in Woodstock, Shenandoah, Virginia.2 William NELSON and Mary MCKAY (AFN-HWR3-2H) had the following children:

His son, my GGG Grandfather was the one who went to MO, see below:

From Goodspeed Histories: William Nelson was a native of Virginia, and one of the earliest settlers of Washington County Tennessee. He Moved to Polk County MO. where he died in 1847 and was buring in the Nelson Cemetery at Oto, Missouri. It is evident that started the move to Missouri with his daughter Emaline who married Peachy K. Snapp in Washington County on 28 December 1837, and other family members. Samuel D. Nelson died in Stone County, Missouri and his Will is filed there. I also found Peachy K. Snapp living in Polk County Missouri in the 1850 and 1860 census index for Missouri.

William Nelson, wife Nancy and several of the children left Washington County, Tennessee around 1838 and moved to Kingston, Roane County, Tennessee. There William filed his Will in 1839 saying he was starting on a long journey (He and the family were leaving for Missouri). His daughter Emaline, died sometime from the time they left Washington County and arrived in Missouri.

Buried in Nelson Cemetery Oto, Stone County, Missouri.

Cathie, I sure wished I could have stayed longer. Let me know how I can help with the project. Given the county's Civil War history, I think the Denlow Cemetery is a great place for that monument.

The annual Denlow School Reunion was held on May 26, 2007 at the Denlow Church.
The Bluegrass music entertainment was wonderful. The time spent with those during the potluck dinner was just as enjoyable.
Several of the extended Alsup family members attended and are very grateful for the invitation.
A ground breaking ceremony at the Denlow Cemetery took place following the dinner. We appreciate all those who are involved in whatever way with this Civil War memorial which will honor so many of our ancestors.
The Goal of the amount needed for this project and more detailed information will be posted on our site as soon as I can acquire all the information. Please check our site regularly for updates and a photo of the recent event. http://home.earthlink.net/~cmickeys/dcm/
Anyone interested in donating to the memorial fund may still do so by making payment to Douglas County Memorial Fund and mailing it to Catherine Alsup Reilly at P.O. Box 1091, Fulton, Ky 42041.
It was great to see everyone and a special thanks to Dr. Kenneth Brown for stopping by.

My mother´s née name was Ebinger - from whar I know her ancestors went from Germany to Ukraine in the 19th century, in a great immigration at that time.
She was born in Donetsk, Ukraine in 1921. Died in Brazil in 2003.
We live in Brazil - me and my sister - both married to brazilians.
If somebody could give me tips on how to get information of my mother´s genealogy, I will deeply appreciate it.
My email is: ekrass@yahoo.com

My research just recently helped me to find my husband's great great grandmother Nancy Boucher who married William Parker. They resided in Edmondson Co. KY, but it was noted that she was born in Lawrence, Co MO. There were about 11 siblings. Their father was Peter Boucher 1770 and Sarah Goodnight 1777 and born in Mecklenburg Co. NC.

Would be so interested to connect with her ancestral family.

Claire Y.
