Massam Reunion, 27 January 2013, Perth, WA

Celebrating 100 years since the arrival in Australia of Charles and Mary Massam (nee Halsall) and family of nine in 1913, from Lancashire, England. A large part of the family spent years farming in the Yerapin area of the Bruce Rock Shire. The unmarried ones who stayed were Queenie, Peggy, Elsie, Charlie and Joe. Harry (also unmarried) worked on the farm for years, and later moved to Perth and became a school cleaner. Ann (Queenie) Massam ran the one-teacher Yerapin State School for decades until it closed in 1942, then taught in various other country schools. The Tom Massam (Senior) and Kit family farmed with Jack Massam at Narembeen, leaving there around 1934, and ran a shop in Perth. The Jack and Vi Massam family moved to Mount Magnet in the 1930s, goldmining. Years later the moved to Perth. The Ted and Bobby Massam family were on the railways, and later farmed at Mukinbudin for years. Later the couple moved to Jurien Bay, then to Gingin. A church service and reunion will be held in Perth on January 27. It would be great to see new faces. By January 20 please contact: Carol Phillips, 9398 6952 or 0408629571; John Massam, 9343 9532.

Benn Family Reunion

Hi,

My cousin and I have been talking about planning a Benn family reunion in Sydney in February 2013 for the descendants of William and Jane Benn of Egremont, England. Most of the Benns in Australia are related so hopefully we can get a lot of people interested in meeting up with their distant and close cousins. Of course cousins off the sibling lines are also more than welcome, we'd love to meet anyone from the Benn clan.

Thanks,

Lesa Moore

Descendants of Thomas Jackson

Hello All. A few cousins have been talking about getting together for a weekend. We have finally set a date - March 15 to 17, 2013 - at Halls Gap. Originally we thought we would try to meet at Ararat but found that it was not totally suitable. ( Where Thomas Jackson first settled ).
Richard suggested Halls Gap - not too far away but with plenty of accommodation and things to do. We would love anybody descended from Thomas Jackson to join us. Please contact us if you are interested and we can keep you informed as things develop. Would you please give us a 'yes',' no' or 'maybe' by email so we know that you know the plan. I have made tentative bookings for cabins and caravan sites at the Halls Gap Caravan Park. We don't have everybody's email addresses - so we would appreciate it if you could talk to others you have contact with.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Jayne Robertson (jayne_2210@yahoo.com)

That all sounds very interesting Dafyyd. I shall read more on the weekend!! Thanks so much.

I did read up about Garrett (Cotter Dam) and it seems he was sent out there so that he wouldn't be able to mix with others and not get in any trouble!! Even though Golbourn & Yass were close ... maybe in those days it was a big trip. And then, not every brother gets on either. Especially if one has a bad reputation and the other is trying to buid one.

I am trying to find out who Mary is .. I've found one Mary O'Brien who married a Kelly. Makes me wonder if perhaps Mary Kelly was actually (nee O'Brien) and partly explains Lenny Cotter O'Brien.

Not sure you've seen this website .. thought you might find it interesting http://www.australiancemeteries.com/nsw/harden/galonghs.htm

Hello Deborah,
The Cotter River and dam in the Brindabella Ranges is named after Garrett Cotter. Garrett and Michael Cotter may have been brothers, but I haven't seen any definite proof of a sibling relationship between them. However, I tend to think that it's possible as both came to Australia from the Fermoy region in Co. Cork, both were sons of a James Cotter, and various lines of Michael's descendants claim a relationship so, perhaps, the claim came from Michael himself?

There are however some things which don't support a sibling relationship. When Michael came to Australia, he was sent to "Tirranna" at Goulburn, and Garrett wasn't far away at Collector to the south of Goulburn, yet there doesn't appear to have been any contact between the two.

For example, in all the Christenings, Weddings, etc. of Michael and Garrett's children, none of the other "brother's" children acted as God Parents, Best Man, Bridesmaids, etc. which I would have expected amongst first cousins. Also, none of Michael's children were named Garrett, which would be expected if they were brothers, though Garrett did name his second son Michael (James was his first born).

So it remains possible that Garrett and Michael were brothers, but I haven't found any definite or conclusive proof of that relationship.

I think you might be a bit harsh on your Mum, the Cotter of Co. Cork were the descendants of the Sons of Ottar who were the kings of Dublin and who also controlled the Isle of Man (where they are still known as the MacCotters), and possibly also controlled Anglesey in Wales. Basically, they controlled the south Irish Sea from Dublin, Man and Anglesey till Brian Boru defeated them at Dublin, and the Welsh with a Scottish army drove them out of Anglesey.

They were also influential in the Scottish Hebrides and are associated with the clans McLeod and McLean.

The Ottars were Vikings from Norway, and they are the descendants of the Scylfings, the ancient royal family in Sweden (hence Ottar, from Ottar Vendelcrow). The Scylfings were based in Sweden but were driven out to Norway by the Goths (Geats) around 500 to 600 AD.

The "Sons of Ottar" Y-DNA project has proven the Norse origins of the Irish Cotters (see http://www.familytreedna.com/public/sonsofottar/default.aspx). Also of interest is the Wikipedia history of the Irish Cotters (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cotter_family), and also Miriam Ellis's speculations on an Ottar, Uther, Arthur connection is interesting (see http://www.miriamellis.com/geneaology1.shtml). So, go and say sorry to Mum.

Cheers,
Dafydd Cotter

Is Garrett Cotter the one that Cotter Dam was named after? My mum always tells me there is a connection .. and one to royalty *LOL ... sometimes I just don't believe her.

Hi Wayne
Janet Gray was the daughter of John Gray and Mary (sometimes Janet) Hogg. John was from Dumbarton and Mary from Dunfanaghy Donegal. John and Mary emigrated in 1855 on the Golden Era with their 4 daughters. Mary's sister, Ellen, from Dunfanaghy, had previously gone to Victoria, and John's half brother followed John to NSW. Does any of this sound familiar. I am very excited at the thought of finding a relative of this family. There are a lot of us descended from Janet and her sisters.

Lorraine Stacker

Hello Bumbles,

Elizabeth Flynn (nee Cotter) was the tenth child born to Michael & Catherine Cotter (nee Dodd). She was born at Taylors Creek, Fish River, NSW on the 1st August 1855.

Fish River is now named Callaba Creek, and it isn't the present location by that name near Gunning. I assume Taylors Creek is a tributary to Callaba Creek (previously Fish River). There is a location named Taylors Flat in that area close by to Narrawa, and there is a Fish River Road near Narrawa, and a Dodd Creek close by.

Michael Cotter was the son of James Cotter, and he was born in either 1809 or 1812 in or around Fermoy in Co. Cork, Ireland.

Catherine Dodd was the daughter of Patrick & Catherine Dodd, she was born in Rathcool, Co. Dublin in 1818.

Hope that helps,
Dafydd
