New York City death certificates

New York City death certificates

Hello All,

I have a question regarding New York City death certificates created past a certain date. From the 1940s or so onward*, instead of indicating a cause of death, they note whether or not the death was due to natural causes, and assuming it was due to natural causes, indicates that these are "more fully described in the confidential medical report filed with the Department of Health." Do you know whether it is possible (for individuals deceased in the 1940s and 1950s in NYC) to obtain copies of these medical reports and, if so, how they can be obtained?

Thanks very much!

*(I haven't looked up the exact date when the certificates were changed and this practice was started; I have just seen it on records from that decade forward.)

Only close relatives can obtain a death certificate that includes a cause of death. If you qualify, this provides info on how to order:

Thank you for the information, Steve!

Have you (or has anyone reading this forum) had success requesting a death certificate with COD as a great-grandchild of the deceased (rather than as a child or grandchild)?

Thanks again!

I would think that anyone in the direct line of descent would be considered a grandchild for this purpose, and if you're a great-grandchild then you would just check the box for "Grandchild".

Hi Steve (and all),

Thanks for your further assistance! The trouble with that NYC DOH certificate request process is that it's only for death certificates from 1949 forward. To order a certificate prior to that, I'm directed to the Municipal Archives, and the certificates that come from the municipal archives are the ones that say that the person died of natural causes "more fully described in the confidential medical report filed with the Department of Health." Any thoughts on obtaining information on the COD in that case?

Thanks again!
