Mullinex to Mulneaux 1910 - 1920
William M Mullinex changed his name to William M Mulneaux somewhere between 1910 - 1920. He was living in Benton County, Iowa. I am not able to find a reason for the change. Does anyone know how I can find out?

Did he change it officially through the courts? or did he just start using a new name?
Also, could it have just been misspelled in the earlier records?

He and one of his brothers just started spelling it differently. Also, all of his children changed the spelling too.

Unless it's recorded in a court document (or family records, like a diary?) then I doubt you'll be able to find out WHY, just when. Some speculation: Mulneaux is easier to pronounce, sounds more French (usually considered more "elegant") AND if they changed it during or after WWI, maybe they were trying to sound as far from German as possible...??? even if they weren't German.
