Death certificate

Surnames: Bayley, Bagley
I have found what I believe to be my great great grandfather's death reference on free BMD but it is listed as Bayley instead of Bagley. The Christian name, age and registration district all tie in with my information. Do I just take a chance and send for the cert or is there any other way that I can verify that this is Bagley instead of Bayley. Also were the indexes compiled from the actual certificates, in which case the name could have been misread, or were they compiled in some other way.

Its possible it was mistranscribed! If you post details we can look on other sites too.

I am taking a guess on the time frame (things change as the GRO gets int the modern age) but the process, while simple, can produce errors.
The local register office retains the original document.
They send copies and summaries to the General Register Office (at the time we are talking about, this would be Somerset House) There is an opportunity for errors to occur here.
The Indexes are created from these by the GRO. More opportunities for errors.
What you are searching is transcriptions of these indexes made by people on minimum wage, and not usually UK residents and familiar with British names and places. Guess where most of the errors occur!
ALWAYS look at the image if you have any doubts at all, if that is Bayley then you may be best served by visiting/telephoning the LOCAL register office. I have always found them to be very helpful, but I know that others report that they can be less than interested. IF they can not help try telephoning the GRO. If no-one will give you a good answer then you will not be charged if you order a certificate that does not exist!

Thank you for your reply. The details are:

George Bagley, baptised 1791 Banbury
I have him on Census 1841-1871, on 1871 he was aged 82 and resident in the parish of Warkworth, Parliamentary Borough of Banbury
