Does anyone have any insight on what was required to process a name change that may have occurred in the 1830's or 1840's?

Did the local county courts handle something like this and create a record for it or was it more of a matter of the indivudal just taking on a new name by signing his new name?

I'm not referring to adoptions here, just an adult changing his name.
