Just out of curisoity what court are these records from? The currency, piastres and escallin, is from the Ottoman Empire. Piastres could also be Egypt but not, I think, the escallin.

It was actually in America 1804. The Louisiana Territory just about the time the US bought it from France in what is now St. Charles County, Missouri. Turns out they are estate papers. I was curious about the currency too. I have never heard of piastres or escallin before.

How fascinating! I knew that piastres were used in Egypt but had also never heard of escallin so I googled both and it appears that these two were standard currency throughout the Ottoman Empire as well as the piastres being Egyptian - but what on earth did that have to do with Louisiana - either before or after the purchase? The French were very active in Egypt - but the Ottoman Empire? I think we have a lot to learn!!
