Thanks for the reply, does make sense now I look at it!

Just wondering if anyone would have any knowledge of that area / or any sources of historical maps ?

Kidgate still exists in Louth, but not Hempstocks yard. I'm assuming that a yard is simular to a lane ? Being in New Zealand it's not a term we hear much!

Rgds

I think it's "do", or ditto, i.e. Kidgate Lane, and then "Hempslocks Yd" which is probably meant to be "Hempstock's Yard", as Hempstock's Houses are mentioned in the description of the enumeration district. The number of the dwelling within the yard follows.

Christine

Hi there

I have a record from an english census. The town is Louth Lincolnshire, and I can make out Kidgate lane as the street name at the top.

However I'm trying to work out the address for the person entry "godfrey Boulton". I can't read the entry on the third line of the addresses.

Any one Help?

Someone I work with lived in the street when she was very young. She seems to think someone was murdered there.

I have searched the internet, but with no luck - I have no year to look for in local papers.

I guess I should contact local history magazines like "The Malago". Or may be a business that has been in the area for a long long time.....

any other ideas?

I should have asked Joan before the Nylon Shop on North Street closed!!!

I have always thought it a bit odd that they called it a "Close" - all the other cul-de-sacs are "*** Street"; Argyle, Summer, and Milford Streets.

I am aware of several street name changes in Southville, Bristol.
Merrywood Road was originally Bull Lane.
The road was renamed using the name of a local building.
Hill Street became Merrywood Close, but there may be a more sinister reason behind this street name change.

I would like to know the story behind this name change.

This notice is pinned here because Bristol is both a city and county in England. Bristol is not listed under the choice of counties. It would be confusing to put there message under the wrong county.

Since these boards are seen by people all over the world, you probably should post this to the locality boards. Drill down from UK and down the subcategories until you get to Bristol.
