Re: Mary Skelley/ Wm Shordon

Hi - an interesting family history project. Another post of yours suggests you know quite a lot about Mary Skelley and her parents Joseph Skelly (1830-1875) and wife Catherine Kerr.

Then, in this current post, you say you have identified a "candidate" to be Mary's adoptive parents Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Shordon. We could research to figure out which couple you mean - but you already know much about them, such as where they live and in what years, whether they had other children, and so on.

You ask whether the Shordons are related to Joseph Skelley's family or Catherine Kerr's family. Yet you don't name Joseph or Catherine in your post. As you reconsider, do you share my perspective that information about Joseph and Catherine is relevant to this quest and should have been posted?

A volunteer could begin to accumulate information based on the snippets you provide. But that is a waste of time if that's merely repeating genealogy work you've already done.

Long story short, you're more likely to attract assistance if you share all the relevant genealogy data (dates of birth, place of birth, dates of residence at various locations, etc), helping volunteer collaborators help you.

Transcriptions of records have a WONDERFUL way of including information that we accidentally omit when writing a narrative. For example, this 1880 census record, below, includes the approximate birth year and birth place of the person you believe is "your" Mary Skelley. It also locates the Shordons in Indiana USA as opposed to, say, Australia or Thailand.

1880
St Joseph, Allen, Indiana
William Shorden	31 born about 1849 in Indiana
Senora Shorden	29 born about 1851 in Ohio
Mary Shelley	18 born about 1862 in Pennsylvania
Christ Nusbanm	24 lodger
Saloman Cavender 31 school teacher

Hope these comments help a teeny bit.

I know when my ggf was born and when he died but since he has white hair in the photo, i'm thinking he may be with grandchildren and not children. Knowing the car model might help as would the clothing they are wearing but I am not knowledgeable about either. Any suggestions?

Josie

Hello! I am looking for your assistance. I have pictures of a Mr. & Mrs. Wm Shordon. I have come to believe they raised my 2nd great grandmother, Mary Skelley, after she was orphaned in 1875. I have found a William Shordon (1848-1898) and a Mrs. Lenora/Senora (Black) Shordon, but I have no proof these are the people in my pictures. Also, I have been unable to find any link between the two families... Any help you can give is greatly appreciated.

Mary Skelley later married Harry Westerman.

Thank you in advance.

Copying of photographs, documents, and stories from another's tree

I have posted many photographs, documents, and stories to my public tree on ancestry.com, to findagrave.com, and to other websites. I try my best to give credit to those from whom I obtain photographs, documents, and stories. I am constantly amazed, however, at the genealogy researchers who will copy these items from my family tree to their own computers, and then upload them as if they were the owners and original posters of these items!

Ancestry.com states, "We want you to get the credit and recognition for the content you share with the Ancestry Community. Any information you post on the site will be linked to your profile, even if others copy what you have shared. This lets others know who the original source of the material is." Ancestry, of course, has no control over those who "steal" the hard work of other researchers.

My tree is currently public. I was excited when I started to receive numerous Ancestry Hints for photographs that I could add to my family tree (recognizing the orginal submitter, of course), only to find the hints were for photographs that I had originally posted! I was upset and made my tree private. This action, however, did not solve the problem because a good bit of my material was already uploaded and saved to the trees of others; they were getting the credit for my material.

My tree is public again, but every day my hard work is "stolen." I may start adding a disclaimer comment to my postings asking that these genealogy thieves give credit where credit is due!

Signed,
One Frustrated Genealogist

Just an extra thought on this subject... it's always good to document the source of any photo, document, or information for your own use later in case some alternate information comes in to play. That way it can be rechecked to determine correct info if possible.

Also... my own thought is that there are getting to be so many photos added ... how many of them may be connected to the wrong person? Considering how many trees have linked incorrect people from other trees, it would stand to reason that photos may also be appearing on some people that may not be correct. Documents are generally fairly easy to confirm, but photos are a bit "iffy".
To be honest it never occurred to me that anyone would want to be credited with uploading an image of deceased family members on this or any other public site. When I 'release' an old photograph of one of my ancestors on here I truly expect people to look, get excited and download, after all these aren't just MY ancestors and the chances are unlikely that I even took the photographs either. Likewise if I did a little more research than a second cousin four times removed I'm more than delighted to be able to share information on any of our related ancestors. Perhaps that cousin doesn't have the facilities available or the time to do the same research. But it IS their history too, surely?

I am very sorry that this causes such offense. I shall be sure to retrace my steps and try to credit the correct member with the correct photograph now and in the future.

I totally agree with the frustration, and when I was seeing my own personal photos coming up as hints on my tree, I contacted ancestry. After a lot of discussion, and probably complaints from others, it was discovered that some of the problem is a result of the sync feature of Family Tree Maker. When a tree is sync'ed from ancestry to a personal FTM, it does not maintain the originators information. Then, when it is sync'ed back up to ancestry, it appears as if that tree owner was the originator. Ancestry said this will be fixed in future releases of FTM.... problem is not everyone gets new FTM's as they are released, so I'm sure this problem will continue for a long time.... even IF it is able to be fixed as they say.

I had made my tree private for some other reasons not long ago, even though sharing was my intent when I started the tree and I had loaded hundreds of photos and obits from 30 years of researching. With this new "glitch" it reinforces the private tree setting for me.

With that said, I also believe there probably are people who download, then upload to their tree and take the credit, intentional or not.

I am fairly new to Ancestery and FTM, but I have accepted photo hints and attached the photos to people in my Ancestry tree. In Ancestry when I view the photo, it shows the origin. However, when the photo is downloaded to my FTM2012, it does not appear to keep the source information, or even a weblink to get back to the picture in Ancestry. I am looking at the best way to document in FTM2012 where these pictures came from.
I'm sorry you feel that people are 'stealing' your photos without giving credit to you - perhaps they are unaware of HOW to give you credit. (I personally have added photos to my tree from cousins that I've never met ... assuming that Ancestry.com would record the origin of the photo.) I never did it with malice and doubt most people do. I'm happy to share any photos that I might have because I'd like to see my children & grandchildren continue genealogy, but there is no guarantee. Perhaps when I die, my kids will likely destroy the photos that I have and they won't have been of any help to my distant cousins, etc. that are interested in their roots. I'm sorry that this frustrates you.

I have hundreds of family photos and one of the reasons I joined Ancestry.com was to help me save these photos and make my tree. Photos from the 1800's ect that I wanted to keep along with the family tree for my kids and future generations. Then I discovered "Mundia". Pictures of my family were on this sight and not by me but by another ancestry.com member. Mundia is a division of Ancestry.com and I had never heard of it. When I made my tree public and shared my pictures I thought it was just to this site. I'm saddened that my 100 plus year old family photos are on a person's site as if they were his... and to top it off, he's wrong. lol It gives me something to think about... I wanted to help others as I was preserving history for my kids. I will just have to tell them that there is a site call Mundia that has their GGG grandparents pictures wrong.

I remember Aunt Carrie , Aileen, Travis ,and Kenneth coming to Tennessee to visit with my grandmother during the summer. We watched Aunt Carrie's home movies. We thought it was so neat because our families did not have a movie camera at that time. I do know who the old man holding the baby is now, Thomas Brantley Brooks. So your a right about it being a Brooks family picture.
I agree with you, Donna. I feel like the whole point of putting our trees online is to share the information with other people searching for their families. It never occurred to me to think of my photos or other information as something to "take credit for" This is only a hobby for me, and my perspective might be different if I were researching for a living, but the benefits of having all our information pooled and available to others seems to outweigh the downside of not getting recognition for posting it.

DeeAnn

YOU know which one he is in the picture, but WE don't.

Point him out, or give an estimate of his age in the picture, and it might be possible to estimate the year of the picture.

Then the pic can be matched to the nearest census which might give a probable selection of family members.

His birth is coming up as Charles Frederick born in Tunbridge Wells in Kent and there is a good match in Tunbridge in the 1891 census.

Dad is James, 53 a carpenter, mom is Eliza, 51.

People didn't move about too much back then and the extended family probably mostly stayed within that area for quite a while.

Re: Copying of photographs, documents, and stories from another's tree

You know, I have a different view on this. At first, when I found that someone had copied photos from my site, I felt the way you did, but I've reconsidered.

I've got messages from people who are thrilled to find a photo that I have. One person, a quite distant cousin who I'd never even heard of, wrote and said that the photo I had of a woman was his great grandmother and it was the only photo he'd ever seen of her. It gave me a warm feeling that he'd found something so important to him that was just a photo I'd scanned from my mother's collection. (I'd never met that distant relative.)

Later, a cousin that I knew quite well growing up, but hadn't seen in decades contacted me and said he'd found photos of his grandfather on my site. He had no photos of him. I knew this uncle. Saw him frequently while growing up. I was more than happy to share all the photos of that line with my cousin. He now has them on his site.

There have also been people who take the photos, but never contact me.

But you know, they didn't take hard copies of the photos. All the hardcopies are still here in my house in boxes. They weren't "stolen." I'm a teacher, so maybe that gives me a different perspective on sharing information and giving knowledge.

I'm thrilled when I find information on a relative. I copy it to my site (so the reference comes with it). I'm a hobbyist and limited time, so I realize as I get farther back on my tree, that I'm going to have to rely on other people to have done some of the work. If in exchange, they can get a lot of documents and photos from me of more recent relatives, that's a good exchange.

So, I'll keep my tree public.

Donna

That is the best way, this way I find we share our hard work with newbies so they do not have to redo our steps and continue proofing our efforts only and adding; and yet adding taht tidbit of who originated the information to each post, photo, or bit or information serves to let people know of us and our hard work. It should be attached so no one can remove to preserve our efforts for future generations so they have it.

Re: Navy Photos from Grandfather's scrapbook

Set up another public tree, name the tree something that reflects the origin or subject matter of the photos, upload the photos, and add a "story" that lists the names, dates and locations for each numbered photo to serve as an index. That way you will retain possession of those digital images and be able to assure continued access by ACOM members.

However, I do not recommend that you permit anyone to become an Editor for that tree besides yourself. Even well-intentioned editing by others could wreak havoc with, and negate, your efforts. At some point, you may want to consider permitting others you have thoroughly vetted to become Contributors and add photos that are pertinent to the subject and photo content of your tree. And another thing, you would need to provide Guest privileges upon request so that non-paying ACOM members could also access the tree. Mundia members should already have access to all public trees on ACOM through the Mundia site.

Once you have completed the new online scrapbook, I would suggest that you place a message on appropriate boards to announce availability of your scrapbook tree and perhaps include a link to the tree page so others may find it more easily. I hope I have covered everything.

This sounds like a lot of work to get it all set up, but your generosity and kindness will be appreciated by those who are fortunate enough to find a photo of a family member or friend.

The name of your Grandfather's ship is an Important clue for searching. Some seamen served on more than one ship and it would be helpful if you can identify which photos went with which ship or naval base.
Although I never met him because he passed away in 1933 in Los Angeles. My father would always tell us about his family that lived in Tularosa, New Mexico. I don't know if Joseph L. Maxwell was in touch with any family members living in California. Sorry but I don't have much info other than what I found in census records.
Grandfather, Clayton Harper of Charlotte, North Carolina

Clayton C. Harper was born in Charlotte,North Carolina in approximately 1847. We were told that he had black hair worn in braids and was supposed to have been of Indian descent. He worked as a carpenter and helped build the town. We were told that he had at least two sisters. We have not been able to find him with his parents, in his youth. He married, built a houseboat, had my mother, Jessie, her twin Clydie, Mary, and Fred Harper. They traveled up and down the Mississippi River in the houseboat, then bought land in Weldon,Arkansas, where he died and is buried on their land, from clearing trees that fell on him and caused his death. We are trying to verify whether he was an Indian, what tribe, and information about his parents before him. We also have no photograph of him and would like to know if the town might have photographs and names listed, of the carpenter men that worked on the buildings there. If you have any known links for information that would help us, please respond. I am 83 years old and my last sibling just past away at the age of 92.

Re: Family copyrighting old family photos?

I don't really think this is a copyright issue in the end.

Legally, I suspect that copyright belongs to the professional photographer, or their heirs. These heirs may have no idea these pictures exist and there may be no evidence to show who took the pictures. See below for someone's opinion on how this works in the USA, where I gather you are. I don't claim to understand it all, but I am in England.

The real problem here is that possession is nine-tenths of the law. The person in possession of the physical prints does own them (the prints, not the copyright), unless the other members of the family can show the prints were taken from the estate of the passed generation contrary to law, which is highly un-likely. Being in legal possession of the physical prints, they can, I think, refuse to hand them over.

This is, of course, really an unfortunate consequence of poor family relations, not really about the law.

Because of my research in to my own family history I have come in to possession of most of our family photos (with the agreement of other family members), some dating back to about the 1880s, so this point of law came in to my mind at that time. In actual fact, I immediately came to the conclusion that I would let any family member who wanted them have copies of the pictures, even if getting copies made ended up costing me money. It just seemed the right conclusion to come to.

Disclaimer : You may need a lawyer to understand this :

http://www.legalgenealogist.com/blog/2012/03/06/copyright-an...
Wanted...Photography Glass Plates to be printed in Queensland

I am looking for someone who can process some glass photographic plates for me in Brisbane Queensland. I have about 10 boxes of them that my great grandfather had taken which were found in a shed. Most are viewable in the light but some are too faint. I would love to get photos off them before the plates disintegrate further.

Any help gratefully accepted

Thanks
Lyn lynb6264 at hot mail dot com

I have a photo of a young boy holding a ball, he's maybe 2 years old. I was hoping it was taken in Ireland and that's why I googled the phbotographer, Sol Young. I thought this child resembled a brother of my grandmother, but I know he was born in Ireland, so once again, a picture with no name on the back. S I G H (and I'm guilty of it too!)
