hit a dead end

I had started my tree awhile back and ran into a roadblock and quit.
Was hoping for some suggestions on how to get started again, or what I could possibly do at this point. Someone helped me find some information about my German great grandparents, and posted census records (attached). In the census records, it shows that my grand father was born prior to marriage. I checked the birth records in the state records center and found two birth certificates, an edited one indicating that his father was August (my great-grandfather), and the original that indicated no father.

I don't really have anybody to ask about this. It happened in the early 1900's and all my grandparents have been deceased for many years.

Any suggestions on what I could do next would be appreciated.

Thanks!!
