Divorce/Annulment 1930ish Nebraska - stuck

Family lore is that my grandmother eloped and was married for 3 months before getting divorce and/or possible annulment prior to marrying my grandfather. Have no idea of his name nor exact date. Cannot find any record of this using her name. I've eliminated the state from my searches and still not finding anything. Any ideas?

Sounds like what you need is her marriage record, as any divorce or annulment probably would be only under the married surname. Have you been looking specifically for marriage records? Also, would she have been old enough to marry in her home state, or might they have gone to a nearby jurisdiction with a lower marriage age? (And keep in mind, "marriage" might have been a polite euphemism for running off with a man and returning - or being brought back - a short time later)

You might want to try some other resources besides Ancestry, such as Family Search (which has a pretty good collection of marriage records).

I have been looking for "any" record as apparently was listed in a family bible (with his name and date of marriage) that no one has anymore. I started in Nebraska but eventually eliminated the state as just not finding anything. Still no luck. Family story is that she had to get a job to pay for the divorce. Again, anything is possible though so who knows whether it was legit. I will try Family Search to see if they have anything. Thanks for the help!

You know that she married again, to your grandfather - if you could find the record of the subsequent marriage (by searching his name), that might give you her prior married surname (unless she was using her birth name, e.g., after an annulment), which could help with searching for divorce or annulment records. I think by 1930, Reno already was the popular place for a "quickie" divorce, so possibly Nevada records would help once you know the married surname?

Her subsequent marriage to my grandfather has her with her birth name so I've been able to find that marriage record. I just cannot find her first marriage record. Family lore is that they wanted an annulment but couldn't get one as he just left her during divorce proceedings so divorce was granted after 3 months of marriage. Family Search had nothing on her first marriage either. I'll see if I can find anything in Reno. Thanks again.

If you would like to post your grandmother's name and birth year, perhaps someone here might be able to help?

My grandmother's name was Helen Irene Radel (birth last name). She was born in 1914 in Nebraska. Her second marriage was in June 1936 to Lowell Lewis Huntington - my grandfather. We're looking for the marriage that was prior to Lowell.

Helen Irene in 1930 was in Wallace, Nebraska per census and in 1935 was in Maxwell, Nebraska (supposedly working to pay for the "divorce") where she met my grandpa and subsequently married.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You may need to check for records offline, too, such as genealogy records that may be available at libraries or held by the county government in the places you think she might have gotten married. Unfortunately, not all records are online.
