How to Source School Records / Admissions

Morning all,

Can anyone give me any guidance on where I might locate school records for Croydon and Lambeth (both London) and Dorset, all from 1900 -1930. I think these records would reveal some useful info for my descendants but I'm unsure how I might go about looking for them.

Any guidance appreciated.

I'm surprised this query hasn't been moved to a more appropriate board, i.e.; a UK board. You might want to repost on a locality board, since regional laws come into play: http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.britisles.england.gene...

In the US, this type of data is never released for public consumption.

I generally don't try to second guess those who post on the Newbies board assuming they are looking for baby step guidance. If that guidance is merely to suggest they post on a different board...that is fine. It is helpful.

Appreciate the feedback, I thought I'd navigated here through the UK link but didn't check the URL. Makes to post on a more appropriate board

Steven, the point is not how you got here, but whether there are other boards that might be more likely to yield results. There are boards that focus on specific geographic locations, which is what was being referenced above. The idea is that boards for the geographic locations you are asking about are more likely to draw readers who will know answers to questions that are specific to local laws and regulations about release of info, etc.

A lot of UK school log books and admission registers from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries have been deposited in county record offices; they can be quite useful. The CROs of the UK are listed on numerous websites or you can google the name of the county followed by "county record office " or "county archives" ; determining which London archives might hold relevant records may be more difficult - I'm afraid I have no direct experience. Sometimes these types of records are held by larger public libraries so it can be worth checking those also.

Hello Steven,

Contact the London Metropolitan Archives (LMA) as a first step. Their website can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/8qrpuej

The “Education in London” link for the archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/k8erwwh

Even if the LMA do not have the information you are looking for, you may be able to learn where the records are housed for the particular school or schools you are interested in.

For Dorset, see the National Archives page for the Dorset History Centre at: http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/a?_ref=31

The subscription website Find My Past has a collection called “National School Admission Registers & Log Books, 1870-1914.” See the link at: http://tinyurl.com/n74wclj

Cheers,

Dave Boylan

In the U.S., some locations have published historical lists of students during specific years and graduates' names with years of graduation, if beyond a certain period of time since the student attended and/or graduated. Also, immediate family can obtain copies of school records of their parents, grandparents, etc., if they can show both their (immediate and direct) relationship to the student and that the student is deceased.
