Edward,

There are many options available to you that can allow you to research your family history at no cost. These options include:

1. Posting to the various message boards at both rootsweb.com and genforum.genealogy.com. Post to as many different forums as possible in order to improve your odds of obtaining information. Post to the surname boards, the state boards, the county boards, the census board, the record lookups board, etc. There are many people who are more than willing to volunteer their time and perform lookups. All you have to do is ask.

When you post a query, always give as much information as possible, e.g., full name (including possible variations of spelling), date and place of birth (if unsure of exact date, give a general time frame), parents’ names if known, spouse and children’s names, last known place of residence, date and place of death, occupation, etc. These are all unique details that can help a volunteer determine if they have found the person you are looking for.

2. Visiting other websites. In addition to rootsweb and genforum, the familysearch.org website can be very helpful. Their search engine is easy to use, and they have several different databases that can help you to locate your ancestors. Also check out the volunteer genealogy website Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness (www.raogk.org). This site includes volunteers from each state and most counties who will perform various lookups at no charge. There are even international volunteers.

3. Investigating your public library. In addition to having books on local genealogy, many libraries subscribe to online databases, such as Heritage Quest and Ancestry Plus, which can allow you to search for ancestors in the U.S. census and other databases. These sites are free, and can often be accessed from your home computer. All you need is a library card.

4. Using free genealogy software. If you are interested in using a genealogy software program to organize your data, Legacy Family Tree is available at no charge. You can download the standard edition from their website, www.legacyfamilytree.com.

Good luck with your research.

Annaliese
