Re: Rose Hannity in Toronto in 1861 aged 20 with James 18 and Mary 35

Thanks Paul for the valuable leads. I have attempted to trace my family genealogy for the past few years. Although I have good information about the family over here in the US, I have very limited knowledge about them back in County Down. My mother, Margaret McCamley, was born in Nov 1910 and came to Canada where she worked in a Toronto Hospital. The whole family back in Rostrevor had no money but plenty of relatives. She lived with her cousin Rose Hannity Miller until she crossed into New York on a tourist visa and never went back. She married my father James Foley in 1940 and became a US citizen. I have found the McCamleys in the 1901 and 1911 censuses in Rostrevor but facts are pretty sketchy otherwise. My maternal grandfather was Paddy McCamley. He was born in July 1869 and died in New York in September 1944. I found a birth record for him from County Down that lists his name as Patrick McCamlagh. I assume this is a Gaelic variant of McCamley but have never found another example in my researches. He was a carter by trade and there is a family tradition that he was instrumental in installing the Rostrevor street lights. I believe he had three siblings: Francis, Margaret and John. As you said, his father was Charles McCamley (born Aug 1837) and the mother Mary Berry. Beyond that my info is conjectural. I matched Charles up with a Hugh McCamley married to a Mary Small but it is guesswork. My maternal grandmother was Margaret Polin or Poland Aug 1872 to Mar 1942). You also correctly listed her father as Bernard Polin (born Sep 1836) and her mother Catherine Woods. (born Mar1839). They were married 1 Dec 1864 in Kilbroney Parish. I have tentatively listed a Joseph Polin married to a Margaret McCourt as Bernard’s parents. They were married 12 Jun 1835 in Clonallon Parish. Likewise I linked Catherine Woods to a Patrick Woods married in 1834 to a Mary Rooney, but I’m not sure. I know next to nothing beyond these bare facts. Any guidance you could provide in expanding/correcting this information would be gratefully appreciated.

Regards

Jim
If you look on the Canadian census for 1861 there are 3 Hannity siblings living together in Toronto aged 18, 20 ,35 and respectfully called James, Rose and Mary. These maybe a bit before your mothers time?

These were all born in Ireland and may be the link. As I said before all Hannity's originated in south Down, Northern Ireland.

One of the Kilkeel family, Rose Hannity (1880-?)moved to Ohio in 1902 (east cleveland) married Karl Judd and had 6 kids. Many of her siblings moved to Ohio too.

Your Patrick & Margaret were married in October 1900, your mothers 2 grandfathers :Bernard Polin and Charles McCamley were both farmers on the slopes just 2km north of Rostrevor. Do you know much about these people or where they lived?

I have researched some Hannity / Henity families in this area, they also farmed in the townlands north of Rostrevor and they had a boarding house in the town which a Eleanor Henity (1757-1842)operated and relatives had a blacksmiths forge a few miles east at Glenloghan enroute to Kilkeel.

what kind of leads are you seeking to pursue? ie further ancesters in Rostrevor area?

Cheers,

Paul

You hit it on the head with County Down. My mother, Margaret McCamley, came from Rostrevor. Her father was Patrick and her mother Margaret Polin. I have an entry card from Canada to the US dated Aug 11, 1931 that indicates that my mother had been staying with a cousin, Rose Miller, at 218 Bleeker St. in Toronto. I believe her maiden name was Hannity. My mother was then 20 and I'm assuming Rose Miller would have been older but I have no DOB. I would appreciate your suggestions regarding any further leads I could pursue.

The Hannity name origins exclusively from County Down in Northern Ireland.

There is a family of Hannity / Hennity s in Kilkeel who had various generations of daughters with the name Rose.
Hi Kathy:

I'm having a little more luck this evening technology-wise. Attached (I hope!) is the death notice I found for Frederick Lockett who died 27 March 1947. His noticed appeared the next day, 28 March 1947, page 28 of the Toronto Star.

A year later, 27 March 1948, page 33, a memorial notice was placed:

"In loving memory of our dear dad Frederick Lockett, who passed away March 27, 1947; also our dear mother Lily Lockett, July 18, 1930.

In memory of those happy days when we were all together

Always remembered by Kathleen and Tom and grandsons Tommy and Gary"

Bear with me and tomorrow I will look up the 2 memorials I mentioned in my previous message.

Hope the attached helps you!

Thank you and I would appreciate the details of the memoriam messages as they may have more clues to help me track down the family. And also when you get a chance, any information you can find on the death of Fred Lockett would be appreciated.

Thanks a bunch.

Kathy

Hi: Found three things:

The Toronto Star Pages of the Past: page 30, 19 July 1930: There is a very short death notice that states: "Lockett -- At the residence, 144 Pritchard Ave, West Toronto on Friday July 18, 1930. Lily, beloved wife of Frederick Lockett, age 49 years. Service at the residence Monday July 21, 1930 Interment Park Lawn Cemetery."

Toronto Start Pages of the Past: page 29, 18 July 1931: There are two in memoriam messages honouring Lily. If you are interested in the details (first names of the people remembering her) post back and I'll look again.

I find the Toronto Star Pages of the Past a bit tricky to search. I started off looking very narrowly for Lockett July 18 1930. Nothing was a hit. Then I broadened the search and found the in memoriam messages. To see 2 in 1931 made me think there must have been a death notice, so I went back and tried searching Lily only and that is how I found it.

I didn't look for Frederick's yet since I'm having trouble with my internet connection, but will try again later and if I find something for him, I'll post back.

Hope this helps.

I know she stayed at Hazelbrae house for a period but am wanting to know where she went from here? I know she married William Frank Monkhouse in 1919 and had one child William Raymond Francis Monkhouse in 1923. However, when her husband died he had married someone else. I am unsure of Charlottes death and would love to have any info which might help me understand more of her life in Canada as i have all the info about her english life which i am happy to share
many thanks
lorraine

Hi,
I am researching the McCosham's of Glengarry. My husband's grandmother was Katie McCosham - born in CLoquet, Minnesota. Her father was Duncan McCosham, born in 1867 in Alexandria. He married Emma Prevost from Quebec.
Duncan's father, also Duncan was born circa 1802-1804 don't have exact date. He married twice. Once with Mary McGillivray on Feb 24 in Lochiel and had 13 children (I have the names), then a 2nd marriage to Christy Anne McDonald, about 1864 and had 5 children. My husband's Duncan came from this 2nd marriage. I am trying to find when the 1802 Duncan came over from Scotland. I haven't been working on this since 2006, but just got a trial subscription to ancestry so I'm a bit foggy but getting back into it! If I remember right, I had found that the 1802 Duncan came over with a brother and their mother, and they were about 30 ish at the time. Would you have info on how they got here and what ship etc?
Thanks for your help,
You can reach me at rmbirchpt@tx.rr.com
Rose Marie

My grand uncle is believed to have died in Essex County, Ontario, on Nov 23,1944. According to Canadian Naturalization (1932-1951) records ... this is what I know:

Name: Joseph Fedoras
Country: Romania
Date of Certificate: Mar 13, 1940
Occupation: Labourer
Residence: Harrow, Ont.
Number and Series: 181275 A.

A brief note in the Birth Register of his village church in Hungary (now part of Romania) merely says the date of death and the words "in Canada". It would seem logical for him to still be in Essex County a mere 4 years after obtaining citizenship.
This is very interesting page. The husband is Alger Lepage, son of Alger Lepage farmer of this parish. But Marie Febronie's parents are not named at all, but Pierre Cote is her tutor ad hoc and friend. She needs a tutor since she is a minor (probably under 21) in canon law. She also signed the register, but nobody else could.
Did you search the register previously for her birth? She is supposed to be of this parish. I wonder why she needed a tutor, maybe her parents were dead, or she was a foundling.

I have the following info from familysearch.com with no further info found.

Name: Wellington Sachreder (probably SACKRIDER)
Gender: Male
Census Place: Burford, Brant, Ontario
Age: 11y
Estimated Birth Year: 1850
Birthplace: U S
Marital Status: Single
Religion: E M
Page Number: 81
Line Number: 16
Film Number: 349249
LAC Film Number: C-1108
Digital Folder Number: 4107375
Image Number: 00748

I am trying to determine who is living with him but it seems this part of the census is only on film, I'm not sure. I have no idea where this portion of the 1861 census can be found. I would be very grateful if someone could check this out for me. The suspected parents of the above Wellington (Sackrider) sachreder are Solomon Sackrider and Laura Melissa Merrill. Wellington was most likely born in Michigan about 1850.

Surrogate Court Estate Files 1850 RG 22-311 Essex County

Does anyone have access to the microfilm for Essex County Surrogate Court Estate File. I requested the microfilm from the Ontario Archives through inter library loan about 6 months ago and still haven't received it. I should have ordered it from the FHL but they are now closed for the summer.

I would like a good quality digital image of the Will of Alexander Taylor who died in 1850. I know the Ontario Archives does have a Scan Pro which will produce digital images. But a good digital photo of the microfilm reader screen works also. I've been trying to finish up our Family History Book and would like an image good enough for printing.

I would appreciate anyone's help with this.
