Names on a mortgage??

Classification: Query
Surnames: Crews/ Paul
I have a question, if anyone can answer or direct me to someone who can;
My gggreat-grandmother (Nancy Crews) can be found in census records, land records, etc. from the late 1820s-1840s. It is assumed she was widowed in the late 1820s. Her name (not a husband) are on these records. Then in 1837, she mortgaged her property and almost everything of value she owned. Her name and a man's name (Hardy Crews) are on this paper (as the ones getting the mortgage). My question is, who is this man? If he were her husband (same surname), then he was missing from her and her children's lives for at least ten years or so. If he is another male relative, then why is his name on the papers? This man's name is ONLY on this paper (he signed it). He is on no other records, and in the 1840 census, she is still head of the house (the only male is my ggreat-grandfather, a 19 year old).
On a side note, she had actually received this land as a land grant five years before, and was listed as a co-owner with her son-in-law (Martin Paul). His name is not on the mortgage.
Thank you!!
