Kentucky Land, where did it go?

My 5th great grandfather William King McKinney (b. abt 1805 in Kentucky) has been a brick wall in my research, mostly because he doesn't have much of a paper trail. I see him on the 1880 census at 74 years old, and then he's gone by 1900. My guess is that he died sooner than that, probably between 1880-1890 (curse you, 1890 census!). I haven't been able to find anything else on him after that 1880 census. However, he seems to have owned 725 acres in Pulaski County & Rockcastle County in Kentucky (there are 4 land grants that seem to be his-- I will confirm this when I visit Utah this spring). I have not been able to find a will or any other type of probate record for him, but the land had to go to someone. I don't know if one of his 12 children inherited it, if it was split between them, or if it was parceled out and sold, but wouldn't there be a record of some sort that could tell me that? More land grants, perhaps? I just figured that if I could find who acquired the land and when, I would have a better idea of when he died. I'm open to other suggestions as well. Thanks!
