north carolina - tax records 1800-1850 for surry and iredell counties

I'm looking for tax records in Surry and Iredell counties from 1800-1850. Any suggestions on where I may need to go?? Would I need to go to the county, a historical society, state archives?

I live in California so if there is an online source available, that would be awesome.

The tax records do not appear to be online and do not appear in the microfilm catalog of those county records filmed by the LDS Church.

The NC State Archives does seem to show them, neither of which have been microfilmed, so you may have to have someone local search the records. A pdf of the available county records is here:
