Read my post on familyguide.com and myheritage.com. Run do not walk away from these phishing sites!

The site acts like a scam so IMO it is a scam. My opinion.... just a hunch- they probably take the records and data people upload and sell it. You can't get back into the site unless you keep adding to it.

I'm sure myheritage is legit- to a point- however ther are alot of complaints about access and emails stating you have 8000 matches, etc. I like to stick with a company that has a proven track record so thats why I only use this site to work on my tree. Again- you are putting very personal info out there and you should have confidence that the site you are working with keeps your information secured.

I tried this site a few days ago. BEWARE! I removed it from my computer. BEWARE! The same day that I signed up for MH I started getting phising emails. I removed the files and the phising abated.
Yesterday I received an email offering me free pass word storage and recovery. The day before that was a download from my ISN. It looked legit, but the english was poor. I clicked on NO BUTTONS and shut down the computer.

I have had no problems with the myheritage site. It is not as good as ancestry.com, but it is free, which makes it a good place for me to have relatives look at info I uploaded as a gedcon file and not force them to pay to join. There is no ease of linking research documents to a person, but you get what you pay for. I took a cheap premium account there after a month, to allow me to weed out poor matches and add more data.

I've been a member since Nov 2011 and in some ways like their Family Tree Builder better than Ancestry's Family Tree Maker. MyHeritage has a lot of issues with buggy software, slow customer service, and privacy but it's a legitimate company and they've cleaned up a lot of the earlier problems. They have some heavy international investors backing them, they've been ambitiously purchasing other companies, and they're having growing pains. But if you start looking into specific complaints, you'll find that they do respond and try hard to make things right.

To be honest calling them a scam would be libelous because they are a well respected genealogy company within the industry. They exhibit at all the major genealogy fairs around the world and have a decent track record. If any of you knew the early days of Ancestry you would know they are a thousand times better than what Ancestry were

I just joined Ancestry this year; comparing them today I wouldn't say "a thousand times better". Better in some ways, and they're working to become better still. For now, I do most of my online research at ancestry.ca, because the MH research tools (SmartMatch, SuperSearch, Record Detective) are in their infancy and hardly even functional. But I keep both sites current because frankly some things are just so much easier in Family Tree Builder than in Ancestry's FTM.
