What do users think of Wikitree?

I recently came across and set up an account on wikitree.

http://www.wikitree.com/

Like the other wiki things, its goal is to group source the information like wikipedia in hopes that everyone working together will build a better and more accurate tree. so when you put things up on wiki tree it is not just your ancestor so anyone that is a descendent of that ancestor can add or edit information. I am not entirely convinced that this will work, mostly due to the uploading of records that have very little information beyond a first name and last name.

I have an extremely accurate family tree and i am very confident in my relationships....it isn't that i know the most about a record but i do not want someone else that has not researched the record very well making potentially wrong changes. but then wikipedia works out OK i suppose.

so has anyone here tried if for a reasonable amount of time to judge if it is worth the time invested?

I have not tried wikitree specifically, but briefly tried a comparable thing on Family Search. I quickly concluded that it was not for me. Among other things, a person who clearly is shown in records as a woman was listed as a man - and I could not change that, but the web site explanations/instructions encouraged me to create a duplicate person with the correct gender.

I agree with your observ ation that wikitree likely will be like Wikipedia - but to me, that is the bad part, not the good part. I see so many wrong things in Ancestry trees (including ones whose owners fail or refuse to correct the errors) that I would not want to invest my time and energy in a project where anyone who wanted to add nonsense could do so. Just my own view.

I love it. I have not had any problems yet. It is not as easy as Family Search which I use as well, but it is not connected to LDS which seems to be a plus for many people.

I've become an avid user of Wikitree. Because it accepts GEDCOMs, there is a lot of garbage on it at the moment, but over time that will be corrected. Generally, people who aren't careful researchers will not mess up the careful research done by others, but simply benefit from it. Because all changes are recorded and accessible, if a wrong addition or subtraction is made, it can be unmade as well. I like that the research I put together will live not just on my own computer, or on an internet file that only I can add to, but as part of a bigger whole!

I agree with the collaboration and sharing aspect, but instead I'd give a humble plug for the website I manage for this purpose -- www.ourfamtree.org. I believe this design is much more informative, whereas the wikitree format leaves a lot to be desired.
