How to deal with a large amount of research material

How to deal with a large amount of research material

I have recently inherited my mother’s genealogy research and I don’t want it to mold somewhere or be destroyed. Is there step by step instructions on how to organize and scan all the photos and documents she collected and assembled into story form? I see something about GED files but don’t know what that is. Also, some of the materials are delicate. I assume there is a right way to treat them and still get them scanned?

GED stands for GEDCOM, do an internet search for details. I keep my research materials, sources, certificates grouped in Maternal and Paternal files then family surnames in each category, then by generations.
The most delicate materials can be photographed by most cell phones made today or a quality digital camera instead of handling them and exposing them to a bright scan light.

Use acid free paper protectors/pockets for certificates and photos unless you want to frame them.

A local LDS Family History Center can be a source of help also as well as their website familysearch.org .

Are you sure scanning them is harmful? Never heard that before.
