I am only familiar with Who's Who of the West by Marque. I may have the Marque part spelled wrong. Who's Who works off the following. A member nominates someone. Who's Who then sent a letter to the person nominated. They invite them to provide info and offers to sell you the book. Same thing works with Who's Who of Junior Colleges. The books associated with Colleges got the names and addresses from the school's deans list or honor roll. They in turn send a letter to the student and or parents and ask for some bio info and offer to sell you the book. There are Who's Who in Theatre as well. Who's Who in the West has several Movie Stars listed along with other well known types. Or, at least they did back in the mid Sixties. My relative who was in Who's Who said it was nice to note on resume but also considered it a huge book selling scam after stroking someone's ego. Cynical but probably some truth to it.
