Pat Carey or anyone else,

Interested in what information is in the New York Vital Records index - birth, marriage, and death. I am planning a trip to NARA in NYC and want to prepare.

Too many people (1000+) to request records @ 22 each ($$$!!!) so I will use the index as a "source" and only order records that are direct for me.

The Califorinia Death Index guides me (names, dates, and parental info) and then I order what I want. The same for other states, too.

Can anyone tell me what is actually contained in the New York indexes?

Thank you,

New York City keeps their own vital records, separate from the rest of the state. I am more acquainted with "the rest of the state" index. There, all you will get is name, date, place, VR #

marriage index for later years may contain the first four letters of the surname of the new spouse.
no parental information

depending on the year and it is far not inclusive there is a new york city index info available on the germangenealogygroup.com site. The menu on the left has "databases" which includes a vital records database.
good luck

Thank you, sounds like I can get some information. I can cross-index some of the folks and as long as the date is shown at least I will have more to go on. The important ones (to me) I can go for.

I have been getting good information out of NYC. Side story - We went to Germany in 2011, found the house my grandfather was born in and was told a last name of one of his sisters. The NYC index off of German Genealogy Group site lend me to the correct record. It all worked out. Then I told my dad that he had a cousin he nver met less than 20 miles where he grew up!

Appreciate the quick answer,

You didn't mention years or names, but you might try the free newspaper site, www.fultonhistory.com it contains some NYC newspapers and you might find an obit. It is searchable - exact, all words, boolean, etc. Don't know for sure about the NYC papers, but the "rest of the state" newspapers are as early as 1830's.

Yes, fultonhistory is an excellent treasure of information. I also use (because of my family tracing) the news.nnyln.net - Northern New York Historical Newspapers site - it covers the counties at the very top of New York. Both have been good to me. I actually been able to use them to find family that have moved west through the years and articles always put a story to the person.

familytrace4fsk,
After you find the record in the index search (try first www.stevemorse.org), you may be able to get it at the NYC Archives on 31 Chambers St. Google it to find the range of certificates they have. If they have it, you can look at their microfilm for free and if it is the right one, they will print it out for you for $11 / certificate. This requires a physical visit. They are not digitized. Microfilm reels in drawers. It is self service. They have about 20 microfilm readers for you to use. Bring a magnifying glass. The quality of their microfilm readers vary and many are broken. Check their web site for their content and the hours open.

Hello,

I was looking for the New York and not the NYC. This past week I did make it to the National Archives in NYC and used the index. I was able to ID direct family and cousins, too. At least with a file number it makes it easier when one needs to pay 22 USD and wait! At least you know there is some type of record.

For the New York State it is best to work from the last name and go through the years. The early years (1880-1900)do not have data as much but after 1900 it picked up. In the NARA in NYC it is on microfiche.

It is too bad the state does not make it easier to use the index. They do now have the death index online from 1957 forward but looking for the earlier years for birth, marriage, and death.

For NYC there is some indexing done by the German Genealogy Group and the Italian group, both online. I have used them to locate the file and then order from NYC.

Thank you and happy family tracing,
