As some have said over time, best source and results are obtained when one seeks and obtains records from the local where the death occurred, either by phone and/or by going there. I obtained clear, readable and complete 1858 probate records for a then obscure GGGF from a County Surrogates Court in MA and discovered a treasure-trove of new information.
PS: Dont forget to research local land deeds. You may also find surprises there; I did.
