mennonite genealogy search engine

I've created a free search engine for Mennonite genealogy. It indexes Mennonite obituaries, censuses, immigration, cemetery, and such from relevant sites across the web.

It was launched last month. It's called MennoTree. Its at http://mennotree.com

It contains both Prussian/Russian and Swiss Mennonite lineages, but there seems to be much more available on the Prussian/Russian side.

Hoping for feedback.

Thanks,
Michael Penner

Does anyone have an original copy of the above book? The full title is "Genealogy and History of the related Keyes, North, and Cruzen Families with a sketch of the Early Norths of England". I'm trying to locate/document family "margin notes" from the original generation and descendants who received the book and may have added Birth/marriage/death or other family data as the book was passed down through the generations.

Original books located to date have green cover and a publication date of 1914. Millard published the book himself in Jamesport, MO

Also - does anyone know the total number of copies Millard published?

If you are unfamiliar with the book...It is available at no cost in the Brigham Young Library digital collection at:

http://www.lib.byu.edu/fhc/

My family line is through John Daniel Stipes - Page 293 in Millard's book. He and family moved from Harpers Ferry, WV to Slater, MO about 1875) Also searching any Connection with Stipes or Stipe of Harpers Ferry, WV or Missouri.

Thanks for any help or information.
Hi everyone,

I have just recently created a Cyprus Family History & Genealogical Group, with the aim of helping researchers to identify what genealogical resources exist in Cyprus. For those, who are resident in Cyprus, and are keenly interested in history and genealogical research, and who would like to volunteer to help transcribe records and identify what records exist for their local parishes/town/village please feel free to pop an email through. You will need a good working knowledge of Greek and English.

As you would know, the district registries, can often be very difficult to obtain information about what sources/what birth/death books still exist in their collections or indeed in even replying to emails/letters/or telephone calls. This rarely happens.

As such, with the collaboration of others, we would be able to find out what records still exist, and or help transcribe local older records which are often in a bad state before they are completely ravished by the effects of time.

If anyone is interested in helping to form a Genealogical Society for Cyprus, or indeed in volunteering to help create a database of records/sources for Cyprus, please feel free to contact me or visit the Facebook group:

"Cyprus Family History & Genealogical Group."

Kind Regards,

Anthony

I've just seen that after a long closure, the website is back. Http://raogk.wikia.com/wiki/Random_Acts_of_Genealogical_Kind... . It has all the volunteers on but the email addresses have been lost so currently very few are linked up. If you ever volunteered, or have had contact with somebody else who did, get in touch with them so they can relink your email address up again.

So it is very much a work in progress - I noticed there are no links to the England page yet and even when you find it through search, the first page doesn't load but it's back, take a look!

Jack

We just reached 14,000 photos on our family tree project. I'd say about 20% of it is from collaboration with volunteers from Findagrave. So much progress can be made from the help of the larger community. Excellent stuff. I agree Margie!

I have a problem with their transcripts of the 1911 census in that although it says 100% complete there seems to be stuff missing. Looking for surname Thirlwell gives few good hits but on Ancestry there are more. I only have a UK Ancestry sub so can't see the details of the Canada entries, though I still haven't found the expected individuals.
Attempting to do some research at Castle Garden, I was presented with a Google-generated warning that the URL is now listed ( http://safebrowsing.clients.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnost... ) as a "Reported Attack Page!". A simple Google search for "Castle Garden" will confirm that listing.

My Norton "Safe Search" says otherwise but I thought I'd post this info here for consideration/comment.

If you have any distant relatives who lived in Russia and would have served in WWII, there's a great site to look them up. It only shows soldiers who have served and were either lost without a trace or killed.

However, they have scanned original copies of the records which show where & when the person was born, lists one close family member and an address for that family member.

Could be a useful clue for some: www.obd-memorial.ru

A great forum for family with Russian roots: www.vgd.ru

Ireland, as I understand, does not have many records available for free. I found a "record" of my grandparents marriage on the site but haven't decided to pay as I have heard that you don't always get a copy of a document but what is on the index. I have the ancestry Deluxe membership and they don't have the record. I even signed up for ancestry.co.uk about 2 years ago and it wasn't there either.

It is free to search, but they charge to see individual records. Does anyone know if this information is offered elsewhere (or on Ancestry.com) for free?
The photos ON my computer are either
a.) scans of the family photos I inherited from my mother;
or
b.) photos that I photographed myself on my camera, i.e. my creation and property.
Ergo, I do not need permission.

I thought you, and other readers, might like to know that copying photos without the photographers' permission is
a.) illegal, otherwise known as copyright infringement;
b.) prohibited by Ancestry's policy;
and
c.) prohibited by Find A Grave's policy.

What made me a cop was finding MY creations copied illegally, immorally and unethically without my permission onto Ancestry family trees. I have to do my own "policing" because people do not use the common courtesy they were taught as children: Ask before using someone's property.

However, please remember the grave photographs on Find A Grave belong to the submitter/photographer. If you want to use them elsewhere, even on your own computer, you need written permission. Ancestry.com's Content Submission Agreement specifically states that you MUST NOT post items that do not belong to you without permission.

Re: free genealogy sites

Yes, there are some free sites. Just as on Ancestry.com, years covered may be limited. Many times this is not under Ancestry's control, but under the governmental entity that controls access to the record.

You don't say where you are located. FamilySearch.org is the biggest free site. RootsWeb is free. It's now run by Ancestry, but anything posted there is still free to access.

If you're in the US, check the GenWeb sites for the states or counties you're researching. Just Google "GenWeb" + (whatever state or county you want). Some GenWeb sites have a great deal of information; other sites have comparatively little.

If you're in the US, see if your local library provides Ancestry Library Edition, Heritage Quest or other databases. If so, it's free and all you need is a library card. Or see if a library in the area you're researching has any online databases that you can access.

www.deathindexes.com lists all the US states and tells what online death records exist on a state or county level. The site tells you if it's free or fee-based. A link near the bottom of that site says "Genealogy Records and Resources." That leads to links of other types of online records. Again, the site tells if the link is fee-based.
I remember when I was first getting started in genealogy, my neighbor who got me into it, was spending a lot of money going to different cemetaries and walking them to get info. Time consuming and costly. On "Find A Grave" you can search and imput your family if need be. I do bios on mine and relative links too. So if you know where your family are buried it is easy to add them. I have found this a valuable tool.If you find a relative and want a photo of the grave, you can request one. There are so many people there who will do it for you at no cost. Please pass this on to your fellow genealogists!!
