I finally found out the more you learn how to search the better it is for you. I found books to buy and whatever you do put all you know about the person even if you think it's not important.Lord the spelling in some of the census. Burrell is also Buril,Burrel Allen is also Alllyn so don't get detoured by the spelling.

Rosie the Riveter was a character, icon, or a nickname for a woman who worked in a factory...? You can read about "her" here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosie_the_Riveter

Are you looking for a specific woman who worked in a factory...? There are probably other ways to find her. Can you post more specific information?

The Jewish and the Chinese, and Hindu calendars being just three examples that are still being used today.

Usually it just means that an individual does not have to work for a living and have a large sum available, either in cash, or investments.

Sometimes there can be a pension of some kind, sometimes an inheritance. Some lucky people live off of family trust funds. As it is a self defining statement, there is no set definition.

determine birth date from birth certificate or baptism?

Hi. In the olden days (1880's to be exact), how common was it for the midwife to record the wrong date of birth? My great grandpa was born in Cleveland, Ohio. His birth certificate says January 1, 1887. However, his baptism says December 31, 1886. On every other record I can find years after his birth (1900 census, WWI Draft, Death Certificate) all say December 31. But his son told me that they always celebrated it on the 1st! I'm very confused about it. I personally lean towards December 31. Any opinions ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

My grandfather's birth certificate (from 1864) also shows one day different from the birth record in the Quaker records where the family information was maintained. My mother always said my grandfather celebrated his birthday on the day shown in the Quaker records. Granddad was born at home and the doctor would stop by later and then send in the information to the state (in my case New Jersey) and the BC could well be incorrect and merely based upon the doctor's recollection--and he may well not have even BEEN there for the birth. My guess would be that my granddad was born sometime around midnight and this could be the case in your situation also. I'd go with the date he actually celebrated his birth and put a note explaining that the BC was one day off.

For what it is worth...Social Security (if your great-grandfather was ever in that system) establishes ages based on "attainment" of an age and under that system a person is deemed to have attained an age ONE DAY prior their actual date of birth...in the case of your great-grandfather this actually mean he would have been entitled to benefits one month earlier than the date of his birth based upon the BC...and he attained age in the year prior to the Jan. 1st birth date on the BC.

Joan

How can I find out if they had children, or if my cousins wife has any living relatives? It looks like the last place my cousins wife lived was Jersey City, NJ.

You'd have to check city directories to track the addresses; then either Sanborn Insurance maps or title searches, to get a sense of what building was there.

Some information that may help is at http://www.imcpl.org/resources/guides/family/house-history/

Getting to New York is not an easy task for me does anyone know if these are published online?

Thanks for all your help!!

I am researching a woman who had the career of a psychic in the early 20th century. I happened upon some ads that she'd placed in newspapers around the state of Indiana; they simply said, "Ladies and gentlemen desiring correspondence, please send names to [name and address]." The ads didn't mention anything about her psychic work at all. I looked around and found that others during the same time period (around 1914) were placing similar ads, in other parts of the country. Was this simply a popular pen-pal hobby back then, or was there more to it than that? Do you think it was related to the psychic work? I have tried googling but really haven't come up with anything, other than people had placed similar ads. Does anyone know anything about this custom, and what the correspondence may have been, if not for a simple pen-pal hobby?

Re: General Geneology question. Did 1900 Catholic families have a tendency to swap their first and middle names??

Census records are notoriously inaccurate - the process of obtaining the information and the purpose of the data collected allows for plenty of minor or major errors. Names in particular were frequently misrecorded because the intent of the census is for demographic purposes - the exact spellings or order of one's name was/is not of vital importance and therefore it is quite common to see misspelled or flip-flopped names. It does not necessarily mean the individual would flip-flop their names in practice, just that they were recorded backwards.

However, some people did go by their middle names. I have more than one "John Henry" in my tree who clearly went by "Henry" or "Harry" and their first name can't even be found on most censuses.

I've been searching for my grandfather's side of the family. Being that our last name is Kennedy and there is a ridiculous amount of people named Kennedy, it's proved difficult.

I know my grandfather's name was Leo J Kennedy Jr. I know his birthday was November 7, 1926 in Massachusetts (probably Lynn, MA). I know he had 9 brothers and sisters. I know the names of some of those brothers and sisters. Pat, Donald, Gene, Winnie...

So I've been trying to find documents linked to his parents. I know his parents were Leo J Kennedy Sr. and Margaret/Margarite/Marguerite Kennedy (maiden name Hanlon). I know they were both born in Nova Scotia, Canada.

You'd think it would be easy to find this stuff... but apparently there were multiple Leo Kennedy's married to Margaret Kennedys who came from Canada to Massachusetts. People weren't very original back in the day, I guess.

I did find which I'm fairly sure is the 1940 census document that lists many of the kids. What's odd is instead of showing Leo J Kennedy Sr as the head of the household, he lists his name as John L Kennedy. But it has to be the right family, because the children and their births line up:
Winifred (winnie) as the oldest (est born 1922).
It shows Daniel as the oldest boy (est born 1923).
It shows my grandfather, Leo (est born 1927... which lines up with November 1926)
It shows Donald (1931)
Eugene (1933)
Dolores (1935)

Has to be the family...

So my next step was finding the 1930 census document...

I believe I found it. But once again Leo J Kennedy Sr lists his name as "John L Kennedy"...

Even stranger, on this document, many of the kids show their middle names too. Below is a comparison between the 1940 and 1930 census:

[Census 1940] = Winifred born 1922 / [Census 1930] Winifred C born 1922

[Census 1940] = Daniel born 1925 / [Census 1930] Robert D born 1922

[Census 1940] = Leo born 1927 / [Census 1930] John L born 1927

[CEnsus 1940] = Theresa born 1930 / [Census 1930] Arlene T born 1929

... Note that the middle initials match up to the names I know. Leo Jr (my grandfather) = John L. Daniel = Robert D. Theresa = Arlene T. Why would they be showing the middle names first?... or do you think maybe the names I believe to be the middle names are actually the original birth names?
