No charge, just a hobby that I really enjoy and have pretty much fleshed out my own trees. I can't guarantee huge results but I am more than happy to give it a wholehearted effort.

Surnames: SUTTON, GOOD, GOODE
Hello there,

I'm brand new to the site but have been doing a bit of dabbling in my family history for some time now. I was hoping to see if you may be able to help me. I've run into a dead-end when it comes to my great-grandfather JOHN RICHARD SUTTON. My mother has told me a bit about his life in Connecticut, USA, (e.g. who he married, what he did for a living, etc) but she never really knew much about his early life.

Thanks to this site I now know that he was born on 14 Jan 1894 in FREDERICTON, NEW BRUNSWICK, CANADA, but I do not know anymore than that with regard to his life in Canada. I'd love to find out about his family. I do recall seeing on the 1920 US Census that his parents were from England, but I can't seem to find any information on them. My mother said that he had been adopted by a family with the last name of GOOD or GOODE in Canada. We do not know how much truth lies in that though.

Anything you may be able to uncover about my great-grandfather would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!
-DMaresca

Hi mlbeeler,

I would greatly appreciate your assistance in my genealogical journey. I have a gut feeling that I've mapped out my maternal side somewhat correctly--I'm sure there are a lot of holes, maybe a few wrong people in the tree. However, on my paternal side I come up short quickly. I am 100% certain of my paternal grandfather's and grandmother's names, but beyond that I'm just taking hints from Ancestry.com and I fear I've gone down a rabbit trail of the wrong lineage of my surname. If you do have some time and are interested in helping me out please let me know! I can provide many more details if you're intrigued.

Thanks for putting your offer out there--really appreciate it.

Hi Mlbeeler,

I would very much appreciate any help you give me at this time. I have run into a brick wall and not sure how to proceed. I have reached the great great grandfather Cuff (cuffee) Grant born in 1858, I am not able to find him on the 1860 or 1870 census, which leads me to believe he was born into slavery. Which could be wrong, but I have no clue as to where or how to search for him. There is a Cuffee Grant that appears on the 1870 census with an address of 1870 Narramores hall, Georgia. On the 1880 census he is married and widowed by the 1900 census. PHEWww, I hope this is a good narrative. Thanks in Advance

Since the original poster hasn't responded since the initial post, you might want to consider posting your query elsewhere. There is a Brick Wall message board which might be useful: Topics/ Research Resources / Brick Walls

Where ever you post, be sure to include the details you have gleaned from the various census records, such as addresses and his wife's name. Provide the names and dates for any children as well.

If you haven't done so, check out Cyndi's List for some helpful links with regards to slavery in the United States: http://www.cyndislist.com/african-american/slavery/

Good luck.

Responding via personal message instead of on the board rather defeats the whole purpose of the boards. I hope you'll reconsider and start replying on the board so that all who use the boards can benefit from your posts.
