Date of death but no place

hi. I have 3 ancestors that have a date of death but no place to record. Have any other members had this problem and if so how did you solve it ? Its frustrating knowing the date but not where they have died. I find it quite odd to have a date and no place.

Kind regards Janette

What is your source for the death date. Many records have a date of death, e.g., SSDI, cemetery records, family bibles, etc., but no place.

You need a death cert or a reliable obit to determine place of death. That become somewhat of a chicken-egg problem since you need a place to search for the cert or the obit.

Hi Bob. Thank you for your reply. My sources are only dates written next to names on family papers and diaries. If I had a state or even a cemetery it would help. However im now wondering if these dates are correct, because if they are entered in a database like ancestry with the persons name, surely a match would be made, so maybe the dates could be wrong.

You would need to research where these ancestors lived throughout their lives. Unless they travelled a lot or were moving to new locations when they died, they most likely lived in just a few (known) locations.

What are their last known locations?

Also, don't assume that all genealogy data can be found in databases! That is very far from the truth! Only a small fraction of records has been transcribed into databases.

Hi and thank you for your replies. Both the mother and daughter spent time in NY,NJ,and PA. Their last known location was New Jersey at the same house. I have searched records and newspapers archives for all 3 states and still didnt have any luck in establishing where they died. The daughter and her siblings were all born NY but over the years moved around the 3 states above.

Post what you know, including full names and dates, on the relevant New Jersey message board. Someone with local knowledge will be able to help you there.

Hi again, yes of course, no use asking for help with no details eh ? Mary Ann Decker Nee Johnston was born 22 Aug 1856 in New York. I have a date of 13 July 1931 for her death. She lived at 21 Grant Street, Newark , NJ for many years. Was still there on the 1920 census under the name Dupa. Her mother Martha Bensley nee Johnston was born 20 May 1831 in Ireland. Date of death i have for Martha is 17 Aug 1922. On the 1860 and 1870 census Martha is living in New York, but moved around between PA and NJ after these census.

Hope this helps, even though there is not a lot to work with sorry.

Is Dupa a mistake? or is that her husband's surname?
