Origin of a mark found on someone's hand

When transcribing parish records recently, among the Burials in Wimborne 1725 was this:-
'a stranger found dead on the road between Whitesheet and Mannington with a mark on her hand ED16991'
Does anyone have any clue as to what this mark means? Tried Google but nothing relates to it. It is just a matter of interest to us all - we thought it might be an ex prisoner or hospital patient etc but are not sure where to look. any ideas would be appreciated.

A mark could mean anything, even just a birth mark or scar. I would not jump to the conclusion of it being an identification tattoo unless you have evidence to suggest you know who the woman was and that she spent time someplace where they might use tattoos as ID.

Is ED16991 the mark?

Or is this some kind of identification of the records you searched?
