I really need help with this and the NARA.gov site is not detailed enough. I am headed up to DC for half of a day in March and I want to pull some records while I am there. My biggest goal was to pull homestead applications for about 8 relatives who received land in the homestead act of 1862 in Alabama. Since these are about $40 each to order, it seemed like the best use of personal research time. From what I have gathered though, these are in Springfield, Virginia at the Bureau of Land Management. I do have some military ancestors I can research as a plan b, two revolutionary war, two civil war and one war of 1812. I think these records are housed at the archives research room National Archives & Records Administration, 700 Pennsylvania Ave., N.W.
Washington, DC 20408-0001. These are "textual records". Does that mean paper files? I just dont want to get there and be unprepared with what I need to look for. Anyone ever researched there?
