Alternate names?

I've got a relative I'm looking for, but for some reason she doesn't appear in any of the censuses with her parents and siblings. Ever. As a matter of fact, she doesn't appear in any censuses I've seen yet. I've only been able to find her obituary and birth year. Is it possible that she was referred to by a nickname? That the name I know her by isn't her legal name?

Yes...it is possible she is listed with a nickname or alternate spelling of her given name. It is also possible her surname is misspelled or improperly indexed. If you tell us her name and birth year perhaps we can try to help you find her or at least let you know what likely nicknames might be.

Joan

Alright, then:
Her name was Jean Putorte (or Putorti), and was born in 1930. Maiden name was Putorte/i, married name was Propper.
Thanks again!

Can you post parents' names, and where (city & state) she was born? If she is using another name, middle name, etc., or if it's been spelled differently, that will help us know we've got the right person. You have her obit- what was her date of death, and first name of her husband? That will help find records that may list her by another name.

I know for sure that her mother's name was Mildred. On the listings I've found, it states that Steven was her father's name. When I run through the children, two of her siblings that I know about are there, and there are two others that I was never told about. Luce and Louise. I figure that one of the two may be her. She passed in 2005, the first name of her husband was Adolph - however, in the obit, he goes by his nickname, Sonny. There's very little information on him, to boot. I'll try and confer with some family members on this again, though. Thanks, anyway!

You answered your own question when you said she was born in 1930. Since that is the latest available federal census, it's the only one she could have possibly appeared in, depending on when in 1930 she was born.

Steven and Mildred were enumerated April 24, 1930. Since the youngest daughter, Elizabeth, is 7 months old (therefore, b. about Oct. 1929), any subsequent child couldn't have been born for at least another 2 months+, assuming a full-term 9 month gestation. So unless Jean's first name is really Elizabeth, she was born after the census.

Louise is age 4 in 1930. Ancestry’s North Carolina Marriage Collection, 1741-2004 shows Louise M. Putorti m. to Louis Dayton Guernsey in 1951. Texas Marriage Collection, 1814-1909 and 1966-2002 shows Louise Marie Putorti, b. about 1926, married to Louis D. Guernsey, b. about 1924, on 17 Dec 1976. So you can probably rule Louise out.

It's possible Jean is really Lucy, or Elizabeth. It would help to get Jean and Sonny's marriage record, which ought to show their given names. Also, I think the Social Security application (SS-5) required one to list the name they were born with, so if Jean did not use her birth name, perhaps the SS-5 would tell what that name was. (If you get that form, spend a bit more and get the actual photocopy to make sure you're not overlooking any clues.)
