Re: Facebook groups for genealogy
I don't think the amount of facebook pages is in question, what is of interest is how people use them

Re: Facebook groups for genealogy
There are many uses. I've seen surname groups, locality groups, (I have two locality pages for my GenWeb sites in Ohio) and there a topic groups. They tend not to be as restrictive as the boards/lists are on ancestry/rootsweb but like everything else some are good and some not so good.

Re: Facebook groups for genealogy
People use them in the same way that they use message boards in other places.

Re: Facebook groups for genealogy
Very true. But I find the facebook groups to be less restrictive than the boards/lists. I belong to the Rootsweb genealogist group and the discussion is not restricted to just rootsweb but to anything genealogy related. I've never had my hand slapped for going "off topic."

Re: Facebook groups for genealogy
Probably because you didn't go off topic.

Re: Facebook groups for genealogy
The unfortunate part of people using Facebook for queries is that they are lost after the moment. There's no ability to search.
I am in a few "genealogical" Facebook groups -- co admin some. However, I find I am always pointing them to the archived geni sites that they can search and post for others to find later.
I find that Facebook is best for connecting today's cousins... via searching the friends of relatives. Or searching to see if someone has an account. Far more productive than posting my particular query in a randomly related (area?) group. Seems that more often than not it is newbies beginning some of the groups and newbies posting to them.
I am not really seeing value in posting queries at Facebook.

Re: Facebook groups for genealogy
Actually, you *can* search for text from postings in Facebook groups.
Go to the group, and click on the magnifying glass on the far right (just past the Notifications and Settings icon).
Then enter the text for searching.
Voila!

Is there a way to upload your family tree from Ancestry to Facebook?
