My father served aboard the USS Leviathan during WWI as a cook. I have several photos taken during that time span.
I can scan and make copies to anyone interested.

My father Robert "Bob" Crecelius boarded this ship 21 May 1918, according to a hand written diary I have. He was a cook also on his way to Brest. Left from Hoboken. May 22, Left the harbor about four in the afternoon nice weather and was good weather all the way across. Nothing to do but lay around and eat two good meals a day and plenty of music. Had a good time and did not spy any Subs until we were in sight of land. Then we were aroused by gun firing. They fired about 30 shots but we landed safely at Brest.
Was really strange to see the name of this ship in your post. I recognized it immediately. Just tho't I would share this little tidbit. Wish his picture was one of them but probably of the crew. Thanks for sharing Mary

Irene: Thanks for your reply to a message that I had forgotten that I jhad posted. I have photos of my Dad in the mess, loading coal, etc, including the ship. I would like to see the book that you have if you would consent to my borrowing it. I would take very good care of the book, rest assurred. I can scan and send you copies of anything that I have. I also just recently received copies of all his military records. I didn't know he spent time in Paris, for instance.
I also was in the Navy and felt proud that I could join in my father's branch, during 1953-1957, and served on the USS Bennington, an aircraft carrier.
My Dad died suddenly at 54, in 1947, when I was 14. I never really knew my Dad and now that I am going to be a late grandfather, I wish I had known him better.
Thanks again for your reply. If you do not agree to the loan of the book, I will understand.
Best regards,
Jim Brusa

Unfortunately, my son took the book back to CA with him this AM to have it rebound. Don't know when I will get it back. My father died in 1932 and I have very few mementos of him. Will see what the near future brings.

Jim, a few years later than your original message, but my grandfather was also on the Leviathan during WWI and I, also, have photos. It would take me awhile to organize them but I would be happy to share copies. He died in 1928, before I was born. My mother says he was a 1st class carpenter's mate. Do any of your photos show a monkey? I have been told he was bringing home a monkey but it became mean and he had to get rid of it. His name was Clarence Edward Spracklen. I have his navy scarf.
Also, I found that Humphrey Bogart was on that same ship but not sure if it was at the same time as my grandfather.
I would enjoy hearing from others with information and photos.
By the way, his daughter (my mother) will be 93 yrs. of age on Oct. 1. She so loved her "Daddy" as she lost her mother to T.B. when she was 2 1/2 yrs.

Of course, I will be glad to receive scanned photos of life about the Leviathan. I have several, scanned and I can send copies at your request. I have donated his dress blues to a group here in Atlanta that has a travel display of uniforms of the past. My Navy uniform is also included. If I hear that you would like to "trade" photos, I will go into my memory box and pull out whatever I can find. Good to hear from you.
My dad was a butcher on the ship and made 18 Atlantic
crossings. He died in 1947 when I was 14.

Jim, thanks for your quick reply. Please be patient with me on gathering the photos. I have some overseas travel in Oct. and the rest of Sept. is pretty full. I am most happy to share the photos and perhaps learn more about this ship. I didn't see an e-mail address on your message. I will be back with you.

My father, Daniel Scanlon, came over from Ireland as part of the quota on the Leviathan in Sept, 1926 to New York. He was not young when he had me.
