I know I am replying to a 10-15 year old post, but I'm hoping someone will see this.

I, too, have a copy of the blue hardcover book, "History of the USS Leviathan, Cruiser and Transport Forces, United States Atlantic Fleet." It is pristine.

I have only recently discovered a treasure trove of my grandfather's papers and mementos. Papa served on the Leviathan in 1917-18. He died in 1962, at age 65; I was 11. Apparently everything of his was stored in a footlocker at some point, put into storage when my grandmother moved from Chicago to NC, ending up in my mother's attic - all without being opened. It was left for us to find when mom died in 2006, and until very recently I have had no time to go through it.

If mom weren't already dead I'd probably kill her for not telling us about it (ok, not really), because there are photographs of people I have no clue about, cards, postcards (nearly 200 of those from early 1900s), photos of the Leviathan, formal photos of its crews, some snapshots of sailors, and assorted other pieces of paper.

On the back fly pages of the book are written the names and addresses of about a dozen men, whom I suppose to have been friends of my grandfather's from the ship, with whom I guess he wanted to stay in touch.

I am slowly working through them, and will be scanning them into my computer as I do. If anyone would like copies of something, please let me know.

My grandfather, Joseph Scott Marion, served on the Leviathan as a machinist or machinist mate. My father, recently passed away said that Joseph Scott passed away when my father was five or six years old. That would have been somewhere around 1935 or 1936.
If anyone has the crew list I would be very interested in a scan. Thanks..Dave

Hi David,
Your grandfather is listed in the crew list of the USS Leviathan book that I have. The book was publshed in 1919, or thereabout. There is no specific information about most of the enlisted crew and no photos, but there are photos of the commissioned officers.

I will scan the entire enlisted crew list and send it to you. Would you like to give me an email address? Or I can post it here if you like. I can be reached at nuttt67 at gmail com.

Lynda,
Please accept my apologies for misspellink your name.
I'm pretty sure I could spot my granddad in a photo the Marion's have several distinct physical traces. With the right views I just might.
My sister is the family historian and she will be amazed.
Thanks Again!
Dave

Hi Dave,
People misspell my name all the time, including my brother (who does it on purpose, because it IS Linda on my birth certificate). No worries.

I'm sorry if there is any misunderstanding. The enlisted crew list consists of names only, no photos. The officers have a group photo, but not enlisted. I don't think I can scan and send every photo in the book.

That said, I have a couple of group photos my grandfather had;I will try to find them. Eventually everything will be scanned and saved, but it's a very slow process.

Cheers!

Lynda

Is the book out of print? I may be asking a question that you have already answered. Please don't scan every photo unless you really want to. That is a whole lotta work for some crazy guy you never met.
