Can you explain this probate record?!

Can you explain this probate record?!

I have a Mary Gillet Bovill, born Michigan USA, died June 15th 1943 at Crossways, Sunninghill, Berkshire. Her husband is Alfred Bovill, born January 1st 1853 died October 26th 1943, also at Crossways, Sunninghill.

So Mary died first and left a large amount of money. Alfred died next and left a small amount of money! Does this just means she didn't leave her money to him? Would the only way to find out, be to get copies of the wills?

Any other ideas ...?

Many thanks

The only way you could find out exactly who she left her money to would be to get a copy of her Will. I am not a lawyer but I also wonder if there might not have been some legal tangle here. Probate for her Will was granted on 21st October, Alfred died on the 26th, just five days later. It could be possible that this affected any inheritance he would have had - there might be a clause that her money was to go to someone else if he died within a certain time. Anyway - you will not get the facts unless you have the Wills, start with hers and see what it says..

Sorry for late reply!

Thanks for this, that's what I thought! I hadn't thought about a legal issue, and funnily enough we have been dealing with a Will recently as my husband is an executor for a friend who died recently. I looked at the small print and there are clauses where something was left to a friend, but if she died within a month of our friend, the husband only got half, so who knows!

Thanks again!
