My Ancestor, Harry E. Herting was located in the 1940 census and the 1939-40 Queens Telephone directory. He lived in Ozone Park. I need to know when the listing stopped so I could try to find out when he died.
Thanks for any help. 7101@usa.net

I am looking for anyone who can do a look-up in a Spotswood, NJ phone or city directory 1976 or later. I am looking for a Marian Osbourne or variant thereof. I do not know her husband's name, or if she was widowed at that point; I only know she lived there in 1976. Also, if anyone has any tips about how or where I can find that information, I would appreciate it. Neither the local library, nor the New Brunswick Genealogy section have that information. Thank you very much.

I am aware that the Swastika had several meanings in other cultures for centuries, and its ties to Hinduism etc. Hitler started using it for the Nazi party in 1920. The Sloans ad was in 1935. That is what stirred my curiosity. Thank you very much for the history about Sloans.

It does go back in history, and was used as a good luck symbol, among other meanings. Apparently there is a Sloans & Kenyon Auctioneers, begun in 2003 as the successor to C. G. Sloan. Below is an excerpt from an article titled "History on the Auction Block" by Harry Edward Neal, and published in Collier's, Dec. 11, 1948. http://www.unz.org/Pub/Colliers-1948dec11?View=PDF

"...Pushing people around is heartily distasteful to genial Mark Sloan. He dislikes being pushed even more. For nearly half a century a counterclockwise swastika was the registered trade-mark of C. G. Sloan & Company. 'The swastika,' Sloan explains, 'was an old, old symbol of happiness, of light—a good luck sign. The ancient Greeks and Egyptians used it on their armor and weapons, the Chinese and Japanese used it, the Navajo Indians used it, the whole world used it long before Hitler—then he had to disgrace it and I had to give it up.'
By 1940, pedestrians were pointing at the swastika trade-mark on Sloan's window, refusing to enter the store. One day a man double-parked an automobile across the street, rushed to Sloan's doorway and shook a fist in the air shouting, 'If you don't take that thing off your window you'll get a brick through it!' At that point Mark Sloan reluctantly removed the symbol from the window and from the firm's stationery, but he is currently considering reviving it...."

I found a picture of a Swastika on one of the pages of the US City Directory, Washington DC, 1935. The symbol is associated with an ad/sponsor named C.G. Sloan & Co. Auctioneers in D.C. Can anyone explain the use of this symbol in the US City Directory at that time. I know the Swastika goes back into ancient history before the Nazi's adopted it. I have my doubts that that this company was using it for such purposes. but you never know. Below is the link for anyone who wants to check it out. It is in the upper left corner.
Thanks Fiona,

More research since yesterday has revealed why I could not find the road in the period, as there is a gap in the digitised records from 1939 to 1956, which is the period I want? Also, Highgate West Hill is in Camden now, certainly, and has been since 1965, but before that it was in St. Pancras North, Highgate polling district (A), Ward No 1. I found it in the 1956 electors registers finally, by which time my quarry had moved! Drat.

Thanks for your time anyway, that's how we progress with the help of other people.

Keith, in South Shields.

I have had no luck finding them in the 1940 Census.

From Emma's 1964 Obituary it indicates her husband George Predeceased her. She was 75 when she died. Emma and George were married in Kings County in 1905 when he was 21 and Emma 18. This would mean George was born around 1884. I suspect that George died somewhere between 1950 to 1963. This would make him 66 to 76 when he died.

The reason I am looking for a telephone book check is to narrow down the time frame (year period) I have to request the health department search their death records for George's DC.

If would you may email directly at garthe@verizon.net on this matter. I can provide you with additional information that may help your death record search for George Klein.

Thanks!

Gary E Baxter

The "good" IMHO is to inform those who use these sources that blind reliance on "published date" of this document bears further investigation as stated in OP.. "Grandmother living with Grandfather at age 11, 7 years before they were married".

Yet this empirical evidence is questioned by another poster. Had they done further investigation, as I had by flipping back one page http://tinyurl.com/9vj3gw7 further evidence of date exists with librarian notation. As these notations are made upon receipt by library, I realize this isn't definitive proof of publication year.

My follow up post Definitively Proves that this document is mis-titled..

Chiloquin Ore. where this directory was published was little more than a trading post alongside a Wagon Track on the Klamath Indian Reservation during those years. It does not surprise me a printed date is absent..
My heirs were prominent in the development of schooling, postal system, and medical care in this area during these years and speak from direct knowledge..

Yes I have used both Report Issue and utilized Acom Help on this issue, as well as several others, Volunteering my Time using my copy of OmniPage Pro OCR software which is trainable to scan and publish documents such as this..

No I have not received any reply from Acom..

Thank You for your Question

Soaked

I have really enjoyed the new US city directories collection. It is as advertised better than the previous city directory collection. However I find continuous errors caused by the OCR process in reading addresses. The process seems to conflate addresses and occupations in numerous cases. For example, consider this case:

[Hard copy directory and Ancestry.com image]
Public, John Q barber r1100 Maple Ave

[Ancestry.com record produced by OCR]
Public, John Q Barber
Street address: 00 Maple Ave.
Occupation:r11

I have "corrected" numerous of these types of errors so that searching will yield more accurate results.

A lesson here for researchers is always look at the image. I know Ancestry.com is seeking to improve the OCR process along with other issues in this very useful database. I just hope it's sooner rather than later

The bakery was owned and operated by the Bruno and Maryanna Koziminski, Bruno died during the flu epidemic in 1918, but the bakery continued. It was located on or near the 3800 block of Kedzie, in a large two story building.....they had their ovens in the basement. and the family lived in an apartment on the second floor.

I have spent all day today trying to find such information . If you know where I can see other later directories online ..... up to maybe the 60s .....it would help me a lot . but you have been very helpful already . My thanks again .

Thank you . I was away from the computer watching " Silk " . I'm from Liverpool but I live near Guildford . Once my Mum passed away I ceased having a reason to go back and that makes me sad . Been away 30 years but still it's my home . Those addresses I gave you are the addresses I am interested in . 12 Kinder Street ( and No. 10 ) . 42 ( and 40 ) Gregson Street and 11 Fitzclarence Street . They were all inhabited by different strands of my family . 12 Kinder Street was my home . I'll send you a map on which I have been working for a long time . But those are the addresses I want to look up .... or ask your friend to look up . The real piece of Gold would be a photo of Kinder Street . I don't have any and years ago when I WAS able to go to the Records Office they had a photo , went for the manila folder ---- and it was empty . Stolen . happened a lot . So i don't have a photo and the houses are long ago gone . Photos of Gregson Street , Radcliffe Street , Kinder Street , Holford Street , Bright Street , Starkie Street and Brunswick Road are what I am searching for and the Gore's occupancy records . It's all the area between the Hippodrome Cinema and SFX church .

Maybe I will get up there for one more visit but it does absolutely kill my soul to look at what has been done to the older areas . at the time some rather wise people said those old properties should be kept , centrally heated and modernised . If they had been heeded we would have some very chic areas of great personality .
If your friend can look up those addresses -- then my many thanks again .

Regards terry m
Hi Terry,

Yes I agree with you, Liverpool has been mindlessly ripped to bits, I am in Bootle, same happening here, I lived in a very well build Vidtorian house, and that is the only house still standing in the road I lived in, now waiting for demolition.

If you want to join a site I am on and ask on there for the directory look-ups, my friend is a member of the site and may spot your request and help you from there, bootlehistory.co.uk a free site to join, and very helpful people, although not directly Bootle related for you, but just the same the are some very helpful genealogists on there (me aswell) haaa. There is also the Liverpool & South West lancs genealogy forum, I don't use that so much these days (membership payable), you will get help on the Bootle site though.

Jan

Thank you . Would you pass my addresses on to your friend for me ? I will look up that site but for now I'll shower and go sleep . I don't like to spend too much time on the computer but you just get drawn in and drawn in don't you ? Look up and I've spent 6 hours there !!!
I'll ask you another question but I won't check until tomorrow . I only found out yesterday that Threlfalls and Walkers Warrington ( the big Merseyside breweries ) kept archive photos of every pub they owned in Liverpool . So some great street scenes I would think . Do you know where those archives are and whether they are viewable online ?

........... and Bootle - I know my dad used to do some night shifts at a printing works in Marsh Lane - and I used to play football for Blundellsands !

goodnight .

terry m
Morning Janette .

Two things for you .
1. The yoliverpool site kept coming up so I tried to look at it . I've tried maybe 60 thousand times on about 6 differnt computers and all I get is an error message . Do you know if it's a dead site ?

2. Nothing to do with anything ....Some teachers decided to get their own back . They invited students to talk to a camera about their days at school ....... but it was a lie so they could secretly dance in the background . And the students never realised !

Here is the video .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jy1RW2Atigc

But a great message . I just don't seem to find the links that open records like this . And you know that yoliverpool site ? Well I had tried to Register on that site and they sent me an "Activation " message on 2nd May . It's while I was trying to activate and get on there that they seem to have folded !!!! My fault maybe ?

Thank you for this list of photos .I'm sorry I didnt acknowledge it sooner .
You are a supremely helpful soul - aren't you !!!

Affections . terry m
Hi Terry,

Don't worry about not replying sooner, I am just glad you got the message in the end, I have been into genealogy for at least 8 years, I have learned a great deal and know a lot of places to look for things, that's where I try to help people if I can, i had a lot of help from others in the past, so I know what it is like trying to find things.

Jan
Janette ..... I am not dumb by any means . I have a pesky degree in French !!! But I simply cannot find how you access those records that told you about the photos in Everton Road and around Gregson Street et cetera . All I can find on the Liverpool Records Site is a general page about where they are located temporarily ... and suchlike . PLEASE can you give me the link that takes me to the lists of photos .... even though I can't view them . Incidentally - that yoliverpool site is running again but its not terrific . The one you sent me " liverpoolpicturebook.blogspot " I find fascinating . It has 5 photos that are excellent for my purposes .

terry

Hi Terry,

Hope this link works, when you get to the page, you can type a key word in the Any Text box, it can be a bit tricky to use, but I find it very useful.

http://archive.liverpool.gov.uk/dserve.exe?dsqApp=Archive&am...

I just typed in the name of one of the streets and those ref numbers came up

Jan
