No children Names show in US City Directories Unless they were listed as a Roomer by the head of household, and would be listed on separate line..

Husband with (wife)in Parentheses. Number following (wife) is number of children in household "if" reported to compiler. Followed by occupation of Head of household i.e. clk "clerk" preceding employer name or special employer abbreviation.
An h preceding the street address indicates head of the home, a r preceding the address indicates other family member or roomer..

Definitions of abbreviations can normally be found in front of the alphabetical listing anywhere from about page 5 to page 80 depending on the advertising. Abbreviations are common for occupations with an additional listing of major local firms of employment listed with most resident names.

Many City Directories have a wealth of local economic and business information in the front of the book. Some have a section on householders arraigned by alphabetical street name showing tenant owned homes by a small o within a Large O that served as a home buyers guide.

Hope this helps

P.S.
I have found thousands of names skipped or scrambled by the automatic OCR in some books.. Names are on the image but not listed in the Searchable Ancestry.com index..
