Surnames: Rees, ap Gruffydd
Hello

Does anyone know of any reliable sources that show the family trees (which includes descendants) of Rhys ap Gruffydd? There were two people of that name I have heard of - one was the ruler of the kingdom of Deheubarth (b. abt 1132), (Deheubarth was a kingdom in what is now modern-day West and South West Wales), and the other was a 16th century powerful landowner and I believe had links to Henry VIII. My dad's cousin informed me that the Rees line ( who were originally from Cardiganshire, Wales) of my family are directly descended from Rhys ap Gruffydd. Not sure which one, or maybe both.

While I'm waiting for the info on this from my dad's cousin, I was wondering if any of you know of reliable sites/sources that have as much info on these Rhyses (including family trees), so these evidence as well as the discs from my dad's cousin I can compare and maybe there could be a possible link.

Thank you.

I do not have Rhys Ap Gruffydd d.1132 but I do have Rhys Ap Gronwy 1190-1246 Carnwyllion, Carmarthenshire, Wales...also Rhiwallon Ap Bledri 1115- Llanwinio, Carmarthenshire...There is a Rhys Ap Gruffydd d. 1197, named in a Book called "Heritage in Wales" pub: 1989, by David Robinson (Cadw Welsh Historic Monuments)..the Lord Rhys as he was called by Henry II. Rhys and his sons consolidated their power in Deheubarth, in DYFED The Rural South -West...This book lists all the Castles the Rhys' are connected to, great book..I have a list of Rhys from Jane Reese 1784- of Virginia USA, (my 4th Great-grandmother I hope) back to Rhys Ap Gronwy 1190-1246, do you have any info on Jane Reese 1784 Virginia USA m Thomas Hanley 1788, or her father Jordan Reese 1775-1813, I'm new at this message board so I'll leave my e-mail mwachs@live.com. Lord Rhys was BORN in 1132, and died in 1197. He was a Carmarthenshire man. I was told by a relative that my great a grandfather, who was originally from Cardiganshire, used to tell a few folk stories about the Rees line of the family, one is the line and the lines of other Reeses of Cardiganshire descending from Lord Rhys. Whether it's true or not is what I'm trying to find out.
I've heard of Rhys ap Gronwy, all I know he was a 14th century man from Cardiganshire.
I live in south Carmarthenshire so I don't know anything about any Americans descended from medieval Welsh rulers.

The best starting point is P.C.Bartrum "Welsh Genealogies AD 300-1400", 8 vols, University of Wales Press, 1974, and its successor P.C.Bartrum "Welsh Genealogies AD 1400-1500", 18 vols, University of Wales Press, 1983. They are in the course of being put online: see http://cadair.aber.ac.uk/dspace/handle/2160/4026
