My great-great-grandfather's job is illegible on the 1911 census. The transcriber thought it was "mange fitter", but there's no such job. It kind of looks like "orange fitter", "grange fitter" or "hinge fitter". Any ideas?

It's much easier to decipher handwriting when a larger sample is provided for comparison.

I like "orange fitter". ;-) The first letter looks like a B (see the B in Birmingham). I was unsuccessful in searching through old occupation sites for any relevant kind of fitter until I found http://privatewww.essex.ac.uk/~matthew/Papers/Woollard_1881C...

Might "range fitter" be a possibility? What was his occupation on the previous census?
If that doesn't help you out, try a new post on the appropriate location board to ask about occupations in iron works. I suggest that because I don't think a post on the occupations boards will be very successful.

Good luck!

The occupation code "664" for the 1911 census:
Stove, Grate, Range, Fire Iron--makers. Range fitter is a good possibility.
