Can anyone read this Census entry?

I am attaching a picture. I have been trying to read what it says - it is the profession entry from the 1860 census. The first two entries there are the same and those are the ones I am trying to read.

At first glance I thought it said "Gun Smith". Definitely a "y" on the end of it though. Maybe "smithy"? I don't think the first word is Gun any more though...

Please provide the names/town/county that correspond with these entries.

By comparing these to other letters on the page, we may be able to translate them.

I think you were correct in your first thought, the occupation definitely looks like gun smith.

As for the Y at the end of the word it's just a peculiarity of the handwriting, take a look at the same downward strokes at the end of the surnames.

I do think it is Gun Smithy, as you thought. Smithy is a valid occupation.

Have you found him in other census data or directories? You could see if his occupation matched (although many folks changed their occupations over the years.)
