William M Caurtney
Birth Jul 1872 in Alabama Death Aft 1910 in Philadelphia, Mississippi

In attempting to locate Courtney family in Alabama, I looked at several pages forward and back from the houshold of William Courtney in the 1900 Carbon Hill, Walker, Alabama census. I did not locate another Courtney.
Being unfamiliar with the layout of Alabama, I do not know the difference in Crenshaw and Chilton; however I do know there is a difference.
I saw the names Daniel Courtney, Martin Courtney, and William Courtney on an agricultural schedule for Crenshaw.
Name: William Courtney Location: Beat 3, Crenshaw, Alabama, USA Enumeration Date: 16 Jun 1880 Schedule Type: Agriculture OS Page: 20 Line Number: 06

I only saw William Courtney on the agriculture schedule for Chilton. I presume there are 2 William Courtney's or he has land that crosses county line.
Name: William Courtney Location: Beat 7, Chilton, Alabama, USA Enumeration Date: 14 Jun 1880 Schedule Type: Agriculture OS Page: 15 Line Number: 03

I did not know if the 1880 Crenshaw list of Courtney's could be used in conjunction with census. We do not know who William M Courtney's parents are? Simply a thought or question? We do not know where William M Courtney is buried at present. Still investigation.

You should try to find William M Courtney's death info first. His death certificate or obituary could be helpful.

Also, you sometimes use Caurtney -- Did he spell his name like that?

What is the source of his death location?

It doesn't seem that you have enough info to jump back from 1910 to 1872. Even if you find a William Courtney who "fits" you don't have a way to prove that he's the right man... You need more info, more "identifiers" for "your" William Courtney. Do you know if he had any brothers or sisters?

Do you know if he owned land? If so, have you researched the land records?

He along with family were located in a 1910 Jasper census.
Name: Mary I Courtney
[Mary I Caurtney] Age in 1910: 28 Birth Year: abt 1882 Birthplace: Mississippi Home in 1910: Beat 4, Jasper, Mississippi Race: White Gender: Female Relation to Head of House: Wife Marital Status: Married Spouse's Name: William M Caurtney Father's Birthplace: Arkansas Mother's Birthplace: Louisiana Neighbors: View others on page Household Members:
Name Age
William M Caurtney 38
[28]
Mary I Courtney 28
Rufus L Courtney 15
Idella Courtney 11
Jasper N. Courtney 7
Mytle R Courtney 3

The transcriber of the census I believe spelled Courtney as Caurtney.
The mother, Mary Idella Spivey Courtney, of the family passed away 15 Aug 1914 in Neshoba County MS and is buried in New Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery with her parents and her siblings. William Courtney is reported to have died a year or so before she did. I am uncertain where he is buried. I have attempted to get an obit and or death certificate. At present, I have had no luck as I shall try again with the death certificate....
In the 1900 census' both William Courtney and Robert Courtney worked for the railroad. I thought that was a something.
In 1910 William Courtney is a Section Foreman for the railroad in Jasper, MS and rents his home.
I do not know if he has any siblings.
I have not had any luck finding a census with Robert, William, and Elizabeth as mother --- sharing.... Still looking.... Thank you and any tips are greatly appreaciated.

Have you tried to contact the cemetery where William Courtney's wife is buried? He could be buried there, even if he's not listed online.

I attempted to call the Church; however their was no answer. I mailed a letter or note to the church and it was returned. Either the address was incomplete on the internet or there was not box for the mail. Maybe I will attempt to call during or around the time of church services??? I did locate 2 Courtney's in a cemetery in Jasper County, MS (they were in Jasper in 1910) . Simply thought I might look into that family as well. grasping... Maybe it was Vernon Cemetery. Yes , I will try to contact his wife's cemetery again. Thanks
