Re: Name change Polish/German?
Have you found your grandfather on the 1920 Census? Where did he live then? Did he immigrate to the US? When?
The 1920 census has naturalization status. From that you might be able to get more information. Check for your grandmother also. I was able to find detailed info on my grandfather on my grandmother's application. It had all of her information plus his birthplace and the last place he lived before emigrating.
You might have luck searching stevemorse.org for information. His site is often extemely useful.
Good Luck! Let us know when you find the right name.

It's not clear where your brick wall is. It would be helpful if you provided the information you already have - where did they live, when/where were they born, any other family members, when/where did they die.
With more information, people on this board may be able to follow your leads to help you fill in the blanks or suggest places to look.

Re: Name change Polish/German?
I would suggest you post this on the boards for Norway, Germany, and Poland. People reading those boards may have more specific knowledge of records in those countries that could be helpful.
