Alias Name on Marriage Certificate

I have come across something strange whilst researching my partners family tree. His 4 x great grandmother appears to have used an "alias" name on her marriage certificate. This has meant that I have hit a dead end as I cannot find which is her correct name. She is down on the marriage certificate as "Frances Chapman - alias Beck" her father is down as William Chapman and is also down as widowed.

There are children with the surnames of Beck and Brown (surname of the man she married on the marriage certificate) however I cannot find a marriage certificate for her and a Beck?

I have attached the marriage certificate.

My impression is that her maiden name is Chapman, daughter of William. It looks as if she had children with a man surnamed Beck, and then was widowed and went back to her maiden name. However, people did lie about being widowed, rather than divorced, or she may have not been married to Beck. However, not finding a marriage to Beck is not proof that it didn't happen- the marriage may have not been recorded, or they married in another church or town and the civil records didn't start until 1837. I would suggest looking for the marriages of the Beck children, which should will list their father's name..
