Since Thomas Cochran was called "Fern" as some family members recall, I was wondering if this could be a nick-name. Has anyone else ever heard of this name either as a nick-name or perhaps a family surname? Any response is appreciated. Amy

Fern is my moter's family name. Although it has appeared spelt differently in records i.e. Fairnes, Ferrin Firne, etc. We've also used it as a girl's 1st name in the family, my sister and my mother's cousin. I have also seen Fern used a a man's 1st name--he was a United Methodist minister in Western Pa.

Fern is also a Womans name - my ex-Mother in law was Alice Fern - from Mississippi. I also heard that is was a very popular womans name in the deep south during the 1920's and 30's.

My sister's adoptive mother's real first name is "Fern" she was originally from TX; but goes by the 'nickname' of Betty.
