I was looking up some information on a person and he was listed in the city directory for San Francisco in the 1800's as an 'Auctioneer, Dwl'. That's a new one on me. Thanks in advance for any clarification.

I wasn't sure what year you were looking in, so I picked the SF 1872 at random. The abbreviations listed right before the alphabetical list of names says that "dwl" means dwelling.
