I am the niece of Ada Brough Flinn. My mother Ellen Brough Moats was her sister. I have fond memories of Uncle Bud as we referred to him. I’m not aware of a son named Charles. Bob ( Robert ) died quite young. His son William (Bill) Flinn is the Exec. Dir of the Tournament of Roses in Pasadena, Calif. Betty was killed in a car accident a few years ago and I have not kept in contact with the 2 boys Bobby and Bernard Myers. Our cousin Jean Hecker who still lives in the New Kensington area may have more information for you. Although I think Bill has been the custodian of the Flinn family information. What did you want to know? my email is jotucker3@comcast.net Hope this is helpful

Why not write to the Salvation Army HQ and ask if they know anything of her? They have an exceptional family tracing service so it is unlikely they would not have accurate member records, and if she was a member for so long - well she must have been recorded somewhere along the line.

Hello Fiona, sorry I have only just checked my posting and realised there was an answer to my query. Dorothy was born January 1898 Southamption workhouse. Married Thomas Cole 7th Nov 1916 St Columbia, Liverpool she was only 18yrs old. Her maiden name on marriage certificate was Sawyer but, on her death certificate it had the name Shervington. The date of her death was December 1976, I would be really grateful for any info found as I am at a brickwall stage with my research on Dorothy. Thank you Ross

John and Phyllis Newton

We are trying to locate information about John and Phyllis
Newton emigrated from England to Vancouver in the 1920's. The Salvation Army helped them find a home in Stanley Park and employment for John in the fruit growing district of Penticton Valley. They both then became members of the Salvation Army. They had 3 sons, Rodney, Godfrey and Phillip. Rodney and Godfrey became Salvation Army Officers. We are not sure if any of them had children.

Philip was born in Canada.

The Salvation Army have provided the following:

"The only records which we have been able to find in our archives are for Godfrey, Whinfrey Newton whose parents were Mr. and Mrs. John Newton who lived at 1370 East 36th Ave. Vancouver B.C. in 1958. Godfrey became a Salvation Army officer in 1959 and his last appointment prior to resigning was as a missionary to Zambia. He was married to Beth Mae Edwards and they had two children, David Gerald born 18.05.54 and Lynne Patricia born 28.05 60. His last known address was Reverend Godfrey Newton, 10475 Oakgate Street, Surrey, BC V4N 1W7"

Any help gratefully received.

Tony Fuller/Tanya Avetoomyan
Berbiguieres 24220
France
My grandfather was Col John Lampard who was with the Salvation Army in India in the late 1880's. He was engaged to marry Lucy Booth (youngest daughter of the General) but broke off the engagement just before the wedding! He returned as an independent missionary in 1893 to work with the Gonds. I have the diary of his first few months there and would appreciate any information about him.

My Great Aunt Winifred Cobley joined the Salvation Army when she was living in Wood Green. She moved to Barnstaple, where her Parents family, (Summers & Cobley), originated from, sometime between 1932 and 1955. I would love to learn more about her and her life. I have a number of photographs featuring her in her uniform with various other members, who I would like to put names and events to, like the one attached. Any info gratefully recieved.

Looking for others who had ancestors working with the Salvation Army in India. My g.grandparents William EVA (aka Capt Seenavasagam) and Jane/Jennie SAXBY (aka Lt. Arulai) were part of the Tamil Division. William had arrived in India Aug 1887 (with the Jubilee Fifty) and Jane had arrived Dec 1890 (with the Memorial Fifty). They were married April 1891 in a ceremony detailed in the April 13, 1891 issue of the Indian War Cry. Some people refered to in this article were Major Jai Bhai, Staff-Capt Santosham, & Lt. Chellaya Pillay. Of course, these names are those assumed in India by British SA officers to help them fit into Indian society.

My apologies for the lack of information that you have been able to gain from Salvation Army sources. I know that in 2002 or 2003 the Heritage Centre was downsized and in 2005/06 the staff was significantly reduced. The current director, Colonel John Carew, should be able to assist you or at least tell you how you might obtain information. Again, sorry about all this. I hope that you do gain some success soon.

I know my father was homeless and lived at the Salvation Army and worked there as a short order cook in approximately 1949-1950. He was homeless at the time. He met my mother there and they moved to Steuvenville, Ohio in 1950. Would there be any records that might give some idea where he came from before that and how he happened to be there at that time. My father died in 1960 at the age of 66 years.
Thanks,
Patti Wilson Westberry

Salvation Army Records

When you are able to locate Salvation Army records, they may, indeed, turn out to be wonderful. I have also received terrific "War Cry" stories, one long article was written by a great aunt, who told of living through the great 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and how the local corps fared during that time. Another story was written about my great-grandfather, who left his local Salvation Army corps to go to Alaska in 1898.

However, most local corps did not work very hard at keeping the usual records of births, deaths and marriages. Even when they did, most have not been sent to Salvation Army archives or museums. Also, succeeding officers may not have kept what records were left by their predecessors.

See my post entitled, "Salvation Army Records," on this message board for suggestions for finding Salvation Army records.

I agree very much with your last suggestion, Sian! Not only can the archives use donations, but any of us who have access to local corps records need to copy them and send those copies to an appropriate Salvation Army Archives. In the United States, it is The Salvation Army Archives and Research Center, 615 Slaters Lane, Alexandria, VA 22313. Their phone number is 703-684-5529. I do not have an email address or URL for them.

I can tell you this: the timeframe involving Ballington Rogers may have been between 1942, when Sparks and his two brothers went to live in Oakland, where his father had obtained work, and September of 1945, when he was inducted into the U.S. Army. On the other hand, the writing is loose. After Sparks returned from the U.S. Army, he entered the S.A. Officers Training College, which was in San Francisco at the time. From my scan of the book, it may have taken place in 1949 or thereabouts. The book has Major Ballington Rogers, San Francisco bandmaster, visiting a local jail with a group. He tells the prisoners a funny story. The part about the band being very good must have been on another page. The only index I have is a name index, so I can't easily look up the band, itself. If you enjoy chatty stories about Salvation Army banding, you should enjoy this book - if you can find a copy.
