In England, you will find printed sacramental registers in use from about 1855. These had a fairly standard format till about 1930 when several variants appear in use.

The first baptism format took the form of a certificate completed by the priest giving the details of the baptism. The form I am familiar with is -

Die 31 Decembris 1894 natus, et die 1 Januarii 1895 baptizatus est Jacobus Bright, filius Jacobi et Mariae Bright (olim Saunders) conjugum:
A me M.Byrne Rect. Miss., [vel Miss. Apos., vel Miss. Coad.]
Patrinus fuit Timotheus Russell Matrina fuit Maria Ward

This translates roughly as

On 31 December 1894 was born, and on 1 January 1895 was baptised James BRIGHT, son of James and Mary BRIGHT (formerly SAUNDERS), married: by me M.Byrne Miss. Rect, or Miss. Apos. or Miss. Coad.
Godfather was Timothy RUSSELL; Godmother was Mary WARD.

Thus you will see that 'patrini' is plural and so refers to the god-parents or sponsors, though in the singular it would be god-father.

I use the phrase "This translates roughly as ..." because the clergy did not have a standard list to translate English names into Latin, so it is not possible to have an accurate list translating Latin names back into English. If the child was called Fred, it would recorded in Latin as FREDERICUS. If you translate that back into English, you are likely to use Frederic, rather than Fred. There is no way of telling from the Latin what version of the name was used by the parents. There are lists on the internet, but some are based on Latin documents from the 1600s and 1700s, and the usage seems to have differed from the later usage of the Church. In general, get as good a copy of the original (an image, preferably) and match it to the names you have for the family.
