Re: OBIT - FORBUS, Anne Nick Kanehen (1912-1986)

Mary Ernenwein (formerly Kanehen) of West Covina is my grandmother. I cannot confirm if she ever married Brodie F. or legally took the surname Ernenwein, she was married to Hayward Walker prior. My memories are vague but I recall Les and Ann, Hazel, and a woman I remember as "babyhr", which makes little sense now. Have no information but would love to learn more.

Wendy fka Ernenwein

obit - SHUBIN, Morris Jack (1920-2013)

MORRIS JACK SHUBIN
February 25, 1920 - April 14, 2013
Montebello, California

Morris Jack Shubin, 93 was born in Mansfield, in eastern Washington State, on February 25, 1920 and passed away in Montebello, Ca. on April 14, 2013. His parents and grandparents were farmers. He was the youngest of several siblings when the family moved to Los Angeles. A few more kids came along after that, so his parents bought a large two-story house in the Boyle Heights area and opened a food market.

Morris attended public school, and like several other artists he believes that his curiosity about the arts was kindled by his teacher, Miss Keck. It was remarkable, he says, for a neighborhood school to allow this wonderful teacher to introduce her young students to art, poetry, Shakespeare's plays, and especially mythology. It was in her class that his desire to become an artist was born.

It was about this time that the Great Depression began to take its toll, so Morris and all his siblings, now numbering five brothers and three sisters, contributed their small earnings to the family by working in the market.

A year after graduating from high school Morris began to court Anne Andrews, whom he had known in school. They dated for a couple of years and when World War II broke out, they decided to marry. A month later, rather than face the draft, Morris enlisted in the Navy and served as a boat instructor in the San Diego area. Of course there was no honeymoon, so Morris and Anne made up for the omission afterwards by traveling together to the many workshops and outdoor painting and teaching sessions Morris enjoyed so much.

After the war, Morris went to work in his parents' food market business, renewed his interest in watercolor painting, and committed himself to a second career as a painting instructor. He also began winning international competitive exhibitions and invitationals, and in 1972 became a signature member of the American Watercolor Society.

By this time Morris was becoming pretty well known. He was featured in American Artist magazine, and his work was exhibited at the Butler Institute, the Springfield Art Museum in Missouri, and the National Academy in New York. Morris and Anne built a house in Montebello, which served as a home and art studio for more than 60 years. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in 2011.

Russian Molokan Dressing and Prayers will be held on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at 2:00pm in the Risher Montebello Mortuary Chapel. The Funeral Service will be held in the Russian Molokan Cemetery Chapel on Thursday, April 18, 2013 at 1:00pm with interment following.
==========================
Grandparents: Moisey Vasilli'vich Shubin (1961-1935) and Fedosia Andre’evna Morozoff (1862-1940)
Known children: Jacob, Masha, Ivan, Katsya
=======================
Parents: Jacob Morris Shubin (1884-1953) and Natasha Nikiforevna Urin (1894-1985)
Owner of Shubin's Market
Children: Peter, Jacob, Andrew, David, Susan, Morris, Peter, Mary, Paul, Katherine, and Harry
=======================
Spouse: Emma Samuel Andrews; married on 10 Jan 1942 in Santa Ana, Orange Cnty, CA
Children: Sandra

Peter treguboff is my uncle by marriage. He was married to my aunt Gail Keegan. When Gail passed away Peter moved and my family has lost touch with him. I imagine he has passes on too by now. I loved him dearly...he gave the best bear hugs. Do you have any information on him post 1997?

You said: Mary Kotoff married to Dan Gray(Patapoff) and had a son Daniel.

In the obit it said Daniel (Glenn). Who is Glenn?

Parents: Alex William Kotoff (1909-1997) and Fenya Vasilevna Bukroff (1906-1976)
Children: William, Jennie, Mary, and Alex

It is unknown where Fenya is buried.

After Fenya died, Alex married Rachael David Filatoff.

Spouse (1): Jim-Johnson John Shubin (1928-2004); married on 15 Mar 1952 in Los Angeles, CA
Children: Mike and Tanya

Spouse (2)Unknown Patapoff

Spouse (3) Mary Kotoff married to Dan Gray(Patapoff) and had a son Daniel.

Note: obituary states Mary has a son Daniel (Glenn) Patapoff Gray.
David (Paul) Popoff was born to Paul (Michael) Popoff and Mary (Tolmachoff) Popoff on December 6, 1921, in Glendale, Arizona. At the age of 91, while in the care of Hospice of the Valley, Dave died peacefully at his home in Phoenix on April 22, 2013, surrounded by his loved ones. Dave survived all of his immediate family; his sister, Anne Babashoff and 5 brothers, John, Mike, Alex, Peter and Morris. Dave's parents immigrated from Russia in 1912, the same year that Arizona became a state. They soon established a farm on 75th Avenue in Glendale, Arizona. He worked the farm with his Father. His mother died in 1963 and in the early 1980's, Dave cared for his elderly father. A few years after his father's death, Dave sold the farm and moved to his new home in Phoenix in 1983 where he remained for 30 years. His farming abilities were transferred to gardening and thoroughbred horses. Dave is cherished by many friends, nieces, nephews and cousins. He has always been an inspiration to many, lived his life in integrity and will be greatly missed by all that know him.
Services will be at Menke Funeral Home on Saturday, April 27, at 10am (preceded by viewing at 9am). Burial will be at 11am at the Russian Molokan Cemetery on 75th Avenue, Glendale, Arizona.

Find a Grave memorial: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=10...

SILIZNOFF, George - Wrecks Railroad Block Signals to Build Radio (1925)

An interesting idea in the article reminds me of the damage caused to equipment by thievery for the copper wire. The incident below happened in 1925.
====================
The individual below I believe to be George Vasilli'vich Siliznoff (1910-1952). He is the son of Vasillii Filipovich Selezneyev Siliznoff and Nastia George Prohoroff. He is buried in the North Kern Cemetery.
===================

Wrecks Railroad Block Signals to Build Radio

Fresno, Dec 22 - A young man's desire to construct himself a radio set almost caused a wreck on the Southern Pacific lines, it was announced today by Constable Ed Fitzgerald in telling of the arrest Saturday of George Siliznoff, 16.
Siliznoff, Fitzgerald said, pulled the wires from parts of three block signals and put these signals out of commission for a distance of several miles.
Inspections by Southern Pacific agents resulted in a discovery f the damage before trains had had an opportunity to get into the block signal territory. Had the trains been run over the district while the signals were disabled, Fitzgerald said a wreck probably would have resulted.
The youth was taken before City Justice Earle J. Church and certified to the juvenile court for action.

Date: Wednesday, December 23, 1925
Paper: San Diego Union (San Diego, CA)
Page: 7
